You say "I'm so sorry, computers are plotting against me, I know it's been ages, want to catch up?"

I know it's awkward and intimidating, but you should just go talk to them ASAP. It will only get more intimidating every day you put it off. Just honestly explain to them why you were out of touch for so long, and explain that you just felt nervous about contacting them. Admitting the truth and admitting when your motivations were weird and silly usually goes over much better than not explaining why you did it. Chances are, they almost certainly know how that awkwardness of making contact after a break feels and will understand. :)

All of this. They might not understand your reasoning but they are far less likely to be upset with you

Tell them what happened; they probably miss you, and are possibly wondering if THEY did anything wrong. Explain "hey, I was having computer issues" and just see. Like Intrigueing said, it'll only get more intimidating/awkward as time goes by, so it's best to explain what happened right away. But chances are they miss you and will be happy to hear from you!

How about picking up where you left off. If it's been such a long time, preface it with, "YO my computer got sick all over itself, sorry it might have looked like I was avoiding you. What up ♥"

Computer trubs are a thing that happen, and it'd be kind of unfair for the friend person to expect you to keep you up to date on every little hiccup that keeps you from instantly calling them or whatever. I do hope you tell them hi though.

I have several fandom friends that haven't been around in ages, but I would be so pleased to hear from them again - there's no bad blood, after all, and it's nice to catch up with people you care about. RL (and computer issues and everything else) can interfere with fandom, and most people would understand that.

Just tell them what happened. I understand the awkwardness, but chances are they won't hold anything against you and will just be glad to know they didn't do anything to make you mad.

People come and go in fandom for all sorts of reasons, so if you just let them know why, there is a good chance they will be understanding.

I know from experience, that the longer you let things fester and do nothing, the worse it gets. And if you never say anything, there will be a part in the back of your head that will remind you about it once in a while.

Good luck, OP!

I'm sure that they'll be glad to hear from you, and that it wasn't anything super serious that was keeping you away.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Basically what everyone else said. Say something to them and explain what happened with your computer. I'm sure that they'll be understanding! And that way you can feel better about having cleared the air, and the other person won't be in the dark about what happened.

Tell them what happened and just say hey! I know there's lots f fandom friends i have that i haven't seen in a while and I know that if one showed up again i'd be on top of them and blabbering to them happily and hugging them.

If the fandom friend that has disappeared from my life a few months back suddenly returned I would give them ALL the internet hugs and be super happy to hear from them. So, please, if you are still interested in being friends with that person just do what everyone has already said. Send them a message, tell them what happened and go on having awesome fandom friend fun.

Tell them - it's not your fault. Crap happens.
