I know it's awkward and intimidating, but you should just go talk to them ASAP. It will only get more intimidating every day you put it off. Just honestly explain to them why you were out of touch for so long, and explain that you just felt nervous about contacting them. Admitting the truth and admitting when your motivations were weird and silly usually goes over much better than not explaining why you did it. Chances are, they almost certainly know how that awkwardness of making contact after a break feels and will understand. :)
