This shit is really bringing me down/I just need to vent.

So, I've been jobless for a while now. About two months ago I went for a job interview for a job I really wanted, and was pretty much in line with my abilities. After the interview there was quite an extensive competence test.

The interview was set up by a temp agency, and some days later I was informed that I didn't get it, but that it was a good interview, and it really was between me and some other guy. He just proved to be slightly better.

So last Friday I get a call from the temp agency, asking if I'm still interested in working for that company, but for another (yet similar) position, to replace a lady on pregnancy leave. I say "yes" enthusiastically. I didn't hear from them by Monday afternoon - so I call back. The girl who introduced me was ill, apparently, so her colleague promised me to inquire about it.

She calls me back, saying apparently someone there vetoed against me coming from a second interview, because my original competence test was sub-par.

Now this is discouraging on two levels: 1. It's not the story I originally heard and 2. this is stuff I'm supposed to be GOOD at. If I'm bad at it - well, then I don't know what I'll do. It just discourages me so much from finding a job - because I just keep hearing no, no, no everywhere.

I always imagined myself being successful at what I do, but what if I just don't have it in me? What if I'm actually bad at the things I'm passionate about.

*sigh*

Sorry for the rant, and thanks for listening.

I'm sorry. That sucks.

I don't know what the test entailed, but it could be that it's just... not very good at measuring actual ability. A lot of tests aren't good at accurately measuring your ability to actually perform.

Hang in there. I'm sure you'll find something someday. Good luck!

Well, they did have me do actual tasks I'd need to do on the job *sigh*.

What really sucked was that it was on a MAC (and I'm a PC user), so it took me considerable time to even figure out how the damn thing worked.

Oh, well there you go - take the "sub-par" results with a grain of salt then. I'd have the same problem. I will run circles around you with a PC, but with a Mac, nothing is in the right place and none of it works properly. Basically, you were trying to do a test in a different language. :)

SA. Er... by "none of it works properly" I meant to say, "I can't make it work properly." (Don't want the Apple fanbots jumping all over me.) But if it's not the platform you're used to, it's no wonder your scores were off.

This exactly.

Plus, people tend to learn things as they need to learn them. Just because you couldn't do it right away on a test doesn't mean you couldn't learn it. All jobs have a learning curve, even if it's something like cutting onions. Whoever was so concerned with your test results is unfair not to realize that. So try not to beat yourself up too bad.

honestly, the second explanation sounds like an excuse to cover up something

have you pissed off someone in high places? or maybe they found someone else to cover that position and want to hush hush that there was ever an opening because nepotism or something

many possible reasons, your actual skills are most likely just fine

Don't see who I could have pissed off.

I don't actually KNOW anyone there, and the actual interview part was pretty amicable.

But it does suck, because this is a big company that has branches in several cities, and it has a lot of jobs for people of my skill set. I I have a secret enemy there, that is not a good thing.

Sounds fairly typical of a temp agency; they jerk you around a LOT.

+1. keep going anon, keep trying. eventually you'll get the hang of all the tests they do, all the agencies recycle the same ones. also, you need to make it very clear to them when you're unfamiliar with the technology you're using. get them to note it on your profile.

They might have told you that you failed the test just to blow you off, as in they forgot about you or there was a mix-up and they gave the job to someone else, or maybe the job was withdrawn. Sometimes people feel the need to lie even when the truth isn't so horrible just because they figure it will make the problem go away faster with a minimum of fuss on their part or just because they don't really give a shit.
