Re: 'You turned me right around on that one...'

I feel the same way sometimes, and I also have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure every generation does experience this to some extent, just from a perspective of having paid their dues, taken their lumps, survived the experience and expecting their own kids to sack up and do the same when their turn comes.

There's probably some legitimacy to it (for every generation,) as there's no doubt that in least some respects the world has steadily become a less harsh place than it once was.

Unlike my own parents, I didn't have to worry about contracting polio or a draft taking my father away from me; my daughter, in turn, doesn't have to practice "duck and cover" at school. And though she does face bullying, unlike myself at her age, she can expect adults to take the problem at least somewhat seriously and try to do something about it, even if we're a long way from really eliminating it. Slow progress adds up from one generation to the next, and the kids these days really can't imagine what it was like for their grandparents or great-grandparents.

On the other hand, we didn't have climate change, Peak Everything or Monsanto to worry about, and the economy wasn't tanking nonstop like it is now. There's undoubtedly an element of "my problems are by definition worse than your problems, because they're my problems" as well.
