'You turned me right around on that one...'

(Anonymous) 2013-05-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel like I've been walking a fine line on things that I believe -- and the internet is pushing me in a direction I didn't think I'd go.

See, I've always been all about accepting people for who they are, and kindness and just generally being nice to people.

But then I pop online, and all I can think is that from 12 to 22, we're looking at the thinnest-skinned, most entitled, delicate group of whiners the world has ever seen.

The internet hasn't been around for the history of the world, so there's no way to measure the thin-skinnedness, entitledness, delicacy, or whininess of every generation in history by a fair, objective comparative standard.

It's called sampling bias. Or something to that effect.

People really aren't any worse or better than ever. It's just that now, everything's on the internet. Now, everyone can see it and take pics, when before it just petered out if it wasn't a big deal.

Pretty sure your last line could have been said by any generation of humans ever - and I'm positive something like it has been said by someone in every generation.

Yeah, but at some point you hit a limit, you know? It's like, you can't GET any more wimpy and still be alive. I don't think we're there yet, but still.

Isn't there graffiti from Pompeii or something, complaining about "kids these days"? Pretty sure every generation has complained about the same things their parents did.

But you don't understand! This generation is TOTALLY DIFFERENT!

Honestly, I am so sick of this whole discussion.

ot sure it was in ompei - but complaining about "kids these days" has been docoumented in Roman times, too.

Also the whole "OMG they're totally butchering the language, kids these days don't speak proper Roman!"

It's like the oldest complaint ever.

Don't know about graffiti, but there's this famous quote, supposedly by Socrates, via Plato (but maybe not from either of them):

The children now love luxury; they have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise. Children are now tyrants, not the servants of their households. They no longer rise when elders enter the room. They contradict their parents, chatter before company, gobble up dainties at the table, cross their legs, and tyrannize their teachers.

That's the one I was thinking of! No Idea why I put it in Pompeii, but that's it.

I love the part about crossing their legs.

There's sites about this.

There is graffiti in pompeii that amounts to the following:

"Lol ur a gay"

"Lol I'm gay"

"I hit it (about a woman)"

"my girlfriend is hot shit"

"This gurl is a whore."

And RPS

Not fucking exaggerating in the slightest.

Personally I like the fact someone felt it was important to record that they made bread.

No, that's the NEXT generation. The ones this group will be whining about in a few years.

Every generation complains about "ugh, the next generation/young generation is totally useless." We're not special in that regard.

Things that were once local, ephemeral, and quickly forgotten are now taking place in public, where millions of complete strangers can potentially see it all. So IMHO it's the same behavior as ever, just better documented/publicized.

Or, to put it another way: in the past it was just a lot easier to avoid.

I feel the same way sometimes, and I also have mixed feelings about it. I'm sure every generation does experience this to some extent, just from a perspective of having paid their dues, taken their lumps, survived the experience and expecting their own kids to sack up and do the same when their turn comes.

There's probably some legitimacy to it (for every generation,) as there's no doubt that in least some respects the world has steadily become a less harsh place than it once was.

Unlike my own parents, I didn't have to worry about contracting polio or a draft taking my father away from me; my daughter, in turn, doesn't have to practice "duck and cover" at school. And though she does face bullying, unlike myself at her age, she can expect adults to take the problem at least somewhat seriously and try to do something about it, even if we're a long way from really eliminating it. Slow progress adds up from one generation to the next, and the kids these days really can't imagine what it was like for their grandparents or great-grandparents.

On the other hand, we didn't have climate change, Peak Everything or Monsanto to worry about, and the economy wasn't tanking nonstop like it is now. There's undoubtedly an element of "my problems are by definition worse than your problems, because they're my problems" as well.

Ahhh yes, Kids These Days Syndrome. That's what I call it, anyway. Happens to every generation. They get called rude, entitled, whiny, disrespectful, blah blah blah... then when they grow up they call their kids the same things. Human nature, it never changes.
