This is one of the things that really annoy me too. I always thought it was because I am not a native English speaker and in my language the word for "female" is only applicable to animals.

Same. Because there is no fucking way in hell anyone could call a woman "Weibchen" and not mean it derogatory or ironically. It's okay to call someone "weiblich" - just as it's okay to call someone female as an adjective. Sometimes English bites it's own arse with it's simplicity.
