I have always thought the angels were the most overrated of all of the Doctor Who villains/monsters. Blink bored me to tears. I still don't know what the hell I am supposed to be scared by.

You're supposed to be scared by (essentially) the angels jumping out and shouting "Boo!". I mean, yeah they send you back in time or whatever. But the reason they're supposed to be scary is the flashing lights and how fast they move and appear.

Which... loses its charm after the first couple of times you see the episode and you know where all the "Boo!" parts are.

The first time I watched it, I was bored. :(

I dunno; as a woman, being sent back in time sounds pretty damn scary. And, hey, imagine being a Black person sent back to pre-Civil War US, or a Jew sent to 1940's Europe in a country controlled by the Nazis...

Honestly, I think it would have been great if they had actually explored that idea that, ya know, a lot of history hasn't been terribly a kind to a lot of people, and a lot of types of people would kinda be screwed if they got sent back far enough...

E.T.A.: TO say nothing of people (like myself) with certain medial conditions that would pretty much leave them screwed if they went back in time. In same cases, it wouldn't even have to be very far...

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
No, you're supposed to be scared because there is something behind you. It is coming for you, and it won't get tired or distracted. You can't argue with it, or fight it. It doesn't need to rest, but you do. It is always there, always coming, and it will GET you when you're not looking.

I'm glad for you that you didn't find it frightening, but it's hardly just about jumping out and yelling, "Boo!"

I kind of agree with this. I don't find them scary at all. I think they are interesting, but not scary. I actually thought they were slightly better and a tiny bit scary once they could actually kill because at that point you have un-killable creatures who can kill you. But they still aren't anywhere near the scariest or best of the Who villains.

Well, I'm highly skeptical of calling anything whose appeal is based simply on primal instinctive reactions "overrated". I mean, their reputation is for being scary, therefore, if so many people find them scary, they're obviously not overrated.

Like...sure, you may find them not scary at all and you have no obligation to do so, because it's not like you can force your brain to be scared of something that you don't find scary. But by that same token, the reverse applies as well. Unlike, say, "the Master is the best villain in the show", which is a statement that can be debated and argued with evidence and reasoning, the angels' merit is based on their ability to scare people, which by its very definition cannot be evaluated and deemed overrated or underrated by any criteria except for how many people they scared, and how badly they scared them.

Now, a person can definitely argue that the Angels are overrated characters in other areas. Like, say, the basic rules of consistency and internal logic. But I don't think the angels can be argued to be overrated because they didn't personally scare some particular person.

Sorry if that made no sense...

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
It made sense to me.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I find them terrifying but can totally see how someone else could view them as really boring and overrated. I have a bit of a fear of mannequins and statues coming alive, so this plays right into that weirdness.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Good to know I'm not the only one. I tried that episode after everybody kept saying how great the show is and how that ep is the best, and if that's really the best the show has to offer, I'm not missing much. Just standing there placid and motionless and quietly threatening had a little potential, but the climax where they make spooky faces in a strobe light while a bunch of idiots jump and scream was just a total failure.

I'm glad it helped you out. Though I am still disappointed how they overplayed the Weeping Angels. (I like being scared out of my wits.) Same thing happened to the Borg in Star Trek. Awesome and scary the first time we saw them but by the time Voyager was done with them they were anything but.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually found them scarier in The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone than in Blink, but I just hated the way Moffat was backtracking on his own rules. He gave them more power, which did make them freakier at times, but they just stopped making sense.

But I didn't find them scary in Angels Take Manhattan... they were just a mess there.

[personal profile] othellia 2013-05-30 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
Same. Despite being annoyed at the changes and discrepancies, I found it scarier that they could kill you and even had to pause the episode to walk around for a bit when the first angel came out of the tv screen.

But the Angels Take Manhattan just destroyed any creep factor they used to have for me.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-29 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I genuinely enjoyed "Blink" (even though I seriously disliked the main girl in that episode. I really don't know if it's because she was just that terrible of an actress or if the writers wrote that way).

The Angels were interesting, I thought, and I was even okay with them the second time they made an appearance. That was it. Like, seriously, there are dozens upon dozens of world out there and you HAVE to re-use the same monsters over and over? Seriously?

Don't even get me started on the cybermen and Daleks (especially the fucking Daleks).

I could have almost written this secret in my sleep (seriously, Blink had me by the lizard-brain for a loooooong time. Went months before I stopped jumping just at the sight of white stone or marble).

...except I don't think that just because I prefer them less scary, that somehow means it's an objectively "good thing" that they're less scary. That ruins the experience for the millions of other fans who weren't as disturbed by them as I was. Who am I to make judgements based solely on my personal foibles? Particularly as their unscariness came along with gaping plotholes and inconsistencies that made no sense.

Also, what mainly made them less disturbingly scary to me was the fact that in Blink, the Doctor was stuck in 1969, and couldn't come and save Sally and Larry. Whereas the Doctor was there with them in subsequent appearances. Yeah, that didn't make a damn difference in safety levels in the plot, but psychologically...it made a BIG difference.

I think the Weeping Angels were interesting for one episode, but then it feels like they're trying to make an iconic Doctor Who villain in the same vein as the Daleks and Cybermen. But they work best when they're mysterious, and putting them in more episodes where their abilities are changing and what not defeats that purpose.

So apparently I'm the only one still scared by the Weeping Angels...?

[personal profile] nyxelestia 2013-05-30 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Those things are fucking terrifying. Still the scariest recurring monsters in the series to me. (Probably the scariest would be those French clockwork robot things, but it's been a couple years since I've seen that episode).

Agreed. I've seen Blink three times and I'm still scared (although by Angels Take Manhattan I was mostly just rolling my eyes). Just...the music, coupled with the Angels' faces when they're close by freaks me out on a primal level.

Um no. I got nightmares from blink and flesh and stone. And when I finally had learned to not watch their episodes I read the summary of the angels take Manhattan and got nightmares from that and had a panic attack in the washing cellar because the light started to go out.

Warning: if the Weeping Angels do in deed scare you, only scroll to the flat blue "blanket" TARDIS cake.

Oh come on... they could have done better with the Statue of Liberty as an angel of course. Reminded me of Ghostbusters. Only Ghostbusters was far better.

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Blink scared the crap out of me... the Angels kept their fear factor for me until about halfway through The Time of Angels. First part of the episode actually ramped up the terror - "That which holds the image of an Angel becomes itself an Angel" (though you've got to give the logical part of your brain a pass, because honestly, with the human propensity toward angel imagery how is Earth not *infested* with Weeping Angels), and oh shit, now they can kill people??

And then they had to start talking - and it was like, "Seriously? Why would they even give a damn about taunting the Doctor? Way to be cliche villians, Angels". They were much more frightening as impassive and unrelenting predators.

Add in the 'not moving because they don't know Amy can't see them' BS, and the mystique, it was dead.
