Can I take this time to complain about fat acceptance people?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Because they always reblog pics of gorgeous girls that just happen to be a bit fat, but have perfect skin and attractive bodies regardless (no cellulite, no stretch marks, hour glass figures and big breasts, toned arms, etc.) and say "Everyone is beautiful." What about us fat girls that have stretch marks everywhere (fucking everywhere, it sucks) and flabby arms and apple shaped bodies, etc.

And: Ugh. No, assholes, I'll never wear a bikini (never while I'm fat or thin) because I can never get rid of the damage I did to my body by becoming fat (stretch marks).

Have you seen the PSA about media portrayal of women and how it's ruining young women's self esteem? There's a montage of average weight girls and women, more than half of whom are blonde with blue eyes and perfectly straight, gleaming white teeth. There were a few WOC included but not a single person was even a little overweight. I have never cringed so hard while watching tv in my life.

Complain all you want, but you might be happier avoiding their tumblrs. "Thinspiration," all those banal platitudes, tends to make me angry, so I stay away from "fitness" stuff on pinterest and tumblr, although I do read some fitness/exercise blogs.

It's like those pictures about natural beauty where people are shown without makeup (except, of course, just a little bit of foundation and powder and lip gloss and photoshop etc. etc.). These people may mean well, but they completely miss the point when they still try to cover up all the existing or imaginary blemishes.

And on the flip side, I see the tabloids at the grocery store with un-made-up actresses and captions that basically amount to "OMFG LOOK HOW UGLY THIS BITCH IS WITHOUT MAKEUP." da fuq you think girls and women are gonna think coming across that shit all the time? (Not directed at you, anon, I'm just baffled at how any woman grows up without some ingrained unhealthy ideas about their appearance.)

I FUCKING HATE THAT. I had to unfollow someone because they kept reblogging those. It's like, that's neato and all but I don't look like a fucking photoshopped supermodel. I don't look like Adele. I've got huge flab wings on my arms, and chunky blobby legs, and the beginnings of a double chin, and my proportions are not at all proportional. Can we get an uggo acceptance movement?

AYRT

God, I'm so jealous of fat girls with thin arms. If there's one thing I'd love to be able to work off, it's my fat arms. I'M WORKING OUT AND LIFTING WEIGHTS AND THE FAT ON MY ARMS JUST WON'T GO AWAY!

Just out of curiosity, what about people who reblog pictures of larger, gorgeous women who have perfect skin and attractive bodies not because of fat acceptance or anything like that but just because they like the picture of a gorgeous girl? Or they love her dress?

I reblog pictures of larger women sometimes and they're often of the variety you're talking about. It's just because I think they've got wonderful style and want to emulate their grace and confidence or because I think their look is really cool and I want to save the picture to draw it someday.

Hm, yeah, it's "fat acceptance", not "everyone acceptance", so I don't like it when fat acceptance advocates present it that way. I mean, they've got their work more than cut out for them already pushing positive fatness, it's okay if the movement can't cover every other form of unconventional attractiveness in the world, but it shouldn't pretend it does.

That said, I have seen lovely people with apple-shapes, stretch marks, rolls, double chins, droopy breasts, you name it, on various fat acceptance (and just fat love) blogs. They're not the front page ideal, but I've felt they were represented pretty well. Enough to make me feel lighter about my own imperfections, anyway.

Yeah, I don't like the focus on "Every type can be beautiful!" I'd much rather see a bigger focus on "You don't have to be beautiful. Your worth doesn't depend upon how fuckable you are."
