Re: Are "whites" in Europe and the US the same?

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I think in the US, whites are people of European descent, not mixed with anything else. But then, there are some groups where I don't know if they are considered white, like Jewish people of European descent and some middle Eastern people who look white (like a half-Turkish girl I know with skin the same color as most white people and blonde hair.)

I don't know what's considered white in Europe.

I'm in the US and they're definitely considered white, at least in my region. My dad is Jewish and has European ancestry...he has light skin, dark blond hair and blue eyes, and I don't know anyone who would consider him anything other than white. All of his Jewish/European friends are also considered white here.

Is Turkish really considered Middle Eastern? I've always considered that European as well, but I guess it depends. I know a Turkish guy who has dark hair, dark eyes, and tanned skin, and people usually mistake him for Italian. He doesn't consider himself white (I'm not sure what he *does* consider himself tbh) but everyone we know does.
