Your Favorite "Very Special Episodes"

(Anonymous) 2013-05-30 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
You know those "very special episodes", especially of '80s and '90s sitcoms, where some serious issue like alcoholism, abuse, racism, drugs, homophobia, AIDS, sexual harassment, medical problems, violence, etc, is addressed, and it affects the main characters in some way and educates them and the viewer at the same time?

Well, most of those are super-cheesy, but some of them are also really genuinely awesome or bold or touching as well. What are your favorite of these episodes?

I'm partial to that episode of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air where Will and Carlton get pulled over by a white cop for no reason. And that episode of Boy Meets World where Shawn was helping a classmate hide from her abusive father.

(Doesn't only have to be TV episodes. I know comics used to do them as well.)

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air with Will's asshole of a father. :( And the Roseanne episode with Jackie's abusive boyfriend. And the episode where Becky gets drunk.

I forgot about that one! And forget hiding, he poured it OUT ("every last drop!")

WKRP in Cincinnati, the episode that takes place during The Who concert where all those people got killed from stadium seating.

Growing Pains: SANDY! "Mike Seaver that's the WORST joke you've ever told!"
Family Ties: Uncle Ned's an alcoholic
Fresh Prince: Will's dad comes to town. "Why don't he want me, Uncle Phil?"
Home Improvement: What if Randy has cancer?!!
Boy Meets World: Sean drinks and doesn't like himself very much either.

I think that's all I have. For now.

That Growing Pains episode DESTROYED me. I still remember it so vividly.

I didn't watch those shows growing up (wasn't allowed -_-) I got all my 'very special episodes' from Degrassi (Junior) High and Press Gang.

Some that stick out are:
Degrassi - Shane takes drugs and falls off a bridge, Liz was abused by her father, Wheels' parents die in a car crash, and he runs away from home, Claude's suicide
Press Gang - suicide episode, child abuse episode, Spike is trapped in blown up building

I thought Static Shock handled the guns and bullying PSA episode very well, even if it was a little bit melodramatic.

Gargoyles also did a good job on their "guns are not toys" PSA episode.

I loved that Gargoyles episode. I especially loved the little follow-up later on where we see Elisa keeps her gun under lock and key now.

Original Recipe 90210 was basically nothing but Very Special Episodes, but I was always partial to the one where Scott Scanlon accidentally shoots himself and the cool kids suddenly have to pretend that they cared about him.

I don't recall ever seeing it in those lists of (in)famous Very Special Episodes so I don't know if it technically counts, but it is much heavier than usual and deals with crime and drugs...so, that one Christmas episode of Boy Meets World where Shawn gets sucked into running errands for a couple of mobsters, at first thinking that he just wants to get enough money to buy Cory a decent present for once in his life, and it winds up escalating into him delivering shady packages and shit. It has kind of a special place for me because it left a majorly memorable impression on me when I first saw it when I was a kid.

That scene where he gives Cory the engraved watch pretty much tears up my insides every time. And the long scene near the end between Shawn and Cory standing in the snow waiting for the delivery pick-up where they discuss the situation and Cory shakes him out of it and Shawn confesses he's ashamed of being dirt poor and a screw-up and a troublemaker and is terrified he'll wind up nowhere in life no matter what he does...honestly, that second scene is one of the best-written serious scenes on a family show I can remember. It didn't even have a specific concise lesson, it was mostly them sitting together trying to wrap their minds around choices and classism and youth and the future and friendship and alluding to Robert Frost. Still sends shivers up my spine just thinking about it.

Designing Women had scads of these I love.

Two of my favorites are the one where Charlene quits her church because the pastor's a fundamentalist asshole and the one where Mary Jo lobbies for condoms to be made available to the high school students where her daughter attends.

I think all the Fresh Prince Very Special Episodes were my favorites out of all the sitcoms I used to watch, because they were the only ones that didn't overdo it. No cheesy music or any of that, just actors showing off their chops to a silent audience, and a good sense of when humor or sentiment would be appropriate (that scene in the jail with the guy singing "Let My People Go", holy shit it still kills me today).

Okay, okay, this one is stupid, butttttt...the pollution episode of The Little Mermaid series. It's so awkward with its message, but I remember it really creeping me out as a child (Which I loved)

I have nothing good to add, but this thread made me think of MST3K and how whenever there was a shot of a beach, Joel/Mike or one of the bots would say "Next, on a very special Baywatch..."

More of a Very Special Movie than a Very Special Episode, but I still have a soft spot for Ferngully.

"I'm so excited ... I'm so excited ... I'm so ... I'm so scared! *sobs*"

I've never watched much of Saved By The Bell but that scene is fucking hilarious. SAVE HER FROM HER ADDICTION ... TO CAFFINE PILLS. *dun dun duuuuun!*

Also the one where they wanted to put an OIL WELL on the school grounds and a pet bird got killed from POLLUTION. *dun dun duuuuuuuun!*

The caffeine pill episode never fails to simultaneously crack me up and make me cringe with embarrassment-by-proxy. It remains my favorite Saved By the Bell episode of all time.

The oil one is also a classic. 'Cause really, how many innocent ducks must die before mankind learns?
