Why are some fans so strange about people getting in to things for other reasons then it looked cool. I mean really even if you did it for attention or because you wanted to talk to your crush about it or you wanted to talk to a friend about something it doesn't really matter. As long as you enjoy yourself who cares.

People (not just fans) get so mad about other's motivations for doing things.
It's kind of sad.

because humans are strange and tribal creatures, and we constantly feel the need to make sure people really "belong" to the groups that make up our identities out of fear that they will hurt us

at least, that's the theory i've come up with from years of observing how fandom works

nayrt

sounds as good a theory as any other!

Because people are weird.

My favourite (least favourite) is people getting angry at someone getting into something late. So the "I was a fan before you/for X years!" people. Well no shit you're a fan before them, they only just found out about it now for (insert reason here). jfc let them enjoy it. Humans are not a hive mind who find out everything at once or hear about everything at once.

I hate those comments on youtube on song videos where people say "thumbs up if you knew this song before [whatever show/film/video game]" or "what is [same show/film/video game]? I'm here for the music!" or whatever silly shit. I mean who fucking cares if people only found the song through other media?? there's nothing wrong with that at all!

So the "I was a fan before you/for X years!" people.

I...actually have a bad habit of thinking that. :/ I'm trying to stop, but my fandoms feel like an important part of me, and when people I know get into them it feels weird because hey, you're taking something that's 'mine' and making it yours. Obviously I'd want them to enjoy the fandom, but I can't help but want them to remember I was into it first.

Then again, I'm a pretty proprietary person. I'm trying to chill out a bit, but yeah.

I am guilty of this, kind of.
But I only did it when my friend started making fandom references without any sincere involvement or interest in fandom, the way insecure people try to refer to edgy things to sound cool.
I got angry and it was dumb.

I feel that way about star Trek all the time. Or very recently, Hannibal.

But I try not to voice it and let people do what they want....key word is try. Cause the crazy Tumblr fandom for Hannibal sets all my teeth on edge and I've blown up about it from time to time.

Especially earlier when I saw a post that, summarized, said this: "They're making Hannibal evil...I should have seen it coming, but I was hoping he would be an anti-hero..."

GAG ME WITH A SPOON, OH MY GOD. GO READ THE BOOKS, FOR FUCKS SAKE.

.....ahem.
