Re: social(?) anxiety

They won't scold you. Or at least, they're not likely to. I had a similar issue where I was wearing my contacts for a lot longer than I should have been because they were more up-to-date than my glasses and I didn't have the money to get new ones. The worst they did was warn me that doing what I did could've caused a serious infection. Otherwise, they understand not having the means to see an optometrist, and they're generally just glad that you're able to come in when you do.

Also, your vision's probably gotten worse just because that's generally what happens with poor eyesight. You probably didn't notice it much before because you were able to see an optometrist before it got too bad.

But seriously. The longer you wait, the more you risk having serious problems. You're still in the clear right now. They might be surprised that you weren't able to come in for so long, but if you just say that you weren't able to until now, they'll drop it. They do understand, and you're not the first person to have done something similar or worse, nor will you be the last.

Make an appointment on a day you're not doing much else, and plan to treat yourself to something nice afterward for having gone and gotten it done. That way, you have something to look forward to if the whole ordeal is unpleasant :D
