On a related note, as this genuinely bothers me.

Why do people get upset at depressed people who hurt themselves and call them "attention seekers"

Is this not a good thing? You want to notice the hurt people so you can help. You want them to attention seek and not hide everything away until they're dead/no longer them. Attention seeking when depressed is a good thing! Their methods not so much, but now people know and can help!

But there are people who'd rather sit and call them attention seekers and then later on lament that no-one helps the depressed?

I'd hope that anyone in pain, no matter if it's physical or emotional, would seek attention so they can be helped O_O

you really have no clue, do you.

I don't think anyone who is depressed and hurts themselves is actually an "attention seeker". I could be wrong, but I believe self-harming is what people do INSTEAD OF drawing attention to the fact that they are unhappy.

Harming yourself for attention is a completely different thing (I believe they call that Munchausen's).

I am completely guessing here, but I think the issue stems from the "emo kids" who claim to be depressed and SAY that they harm themselves/etc. but don't, or who glorify it and act like cutting is a good thing, drawing negative attention to actually depressed people. Sadly, there are instances of people lying about various disorders/abuse/etc., saying that they are sick or that horrible things happen to them, when it's not true. (As far as I know, this usually isn't the case, but people hear of it happening once or twice and make assumptions)

But again, I'm just guessing.
