What I watched/read: Game of Thrones/ASOIAF (caught up with the series, almost finished with book 1)

What I expected: Henry VI WITH DRAGONS! (note that this sort of was GRRM's starting point for the series: a fantasy War of the Roses. The Starks are the Yorkists, the Lannisters are the Lancastarians.)

What I got: Far more than 2 factions, a lot more children POV characters, a lot less dragons/magic/other traditionally "fantasy" elements. Less Shakespeare cribbing than I anticipated, but I totally get and appreciate that Tyrion is Falconbridge from King John.
