Stupid question about naming characters

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Is it offensive to give a character a first name that doesn't match their last name culturally? (For example, a Chinese first name and Swedish last name.)

I'm asking because I thought this would be a good way to imply that someone comes from a mixed background without making a big deal about their ethnicity, but I saw someone on tumblr say that it's offensive when characters have "culturally incorrect" names, or something like that (paraphrasing since I can't remember the exact wording).

Nope, not offensive. And actually a good reflection of real world naming practices of mixed background families. Sounds like you ran across some over the top SJW types on tumblr, best to just ignore that.

OK, thank you!

it would be offensive if it was just to make them seem cool, but if they're from a mixed background (or it is a plot point or such that their parents are like weeabos or something and named their child something out of idolizing a foreign culture), it should be okay

I just googled what a weeaboo is and... I don't think I will be writing about people like that. Thank you, though!

two points here

one, it depends on the context a lot, but it's probably okay as long as it's something that makes sense for the character in question. i mean, shit - if they come from a mixed background, isn't a mixed name precisely what's 'culturally correct'?

two, why are you listening to what random people on tumblr say is offensive

one - That's what I thought! I just like to get a second opinion about this sort of thing.

two - I've found some good writing advice on tumblr in the past.

I don't think seeing that on Tumblr means that it's actually offensive, it means that Tumblr is full of fucking idiots.

Not everyone on there is an idiot. :(

DA

No, but not everyone on there is rational, either.

I think that tumblr post is talking about situations where show makers will, for example, give a Korean character a Japanese name cause omg all them asians are the same right? In that case, yes, it is offensive.

On the other hand, if you have a character who comes from a mixed background, who has a name that reflects on both of those backgrounds, nobody is going to take offence. These things are all about context.

That makes much more sense to me. The post wasn't very clear about it. Thanks!

As long as your name makes sense then it's fine. Don't do something like calling them "Sakura Delphine Cumberbatch".

Oh LOL, I only just realised that a bunch of tumblrites probably thinks my name is offensive! Yay! :D

(I totally should have realised that earlier...)

This is a thing that actually happens. Lucy Liu and B.D. Wong (who's first name is Bradley) are people of Asian descent who have Western first names.

So, yeah, I fail to see the problem.

There are a metric fuckton of names that have been adopted cross-culturally simply because we live in an integrated world. As long as it's not actually incorrect or unlikely/impossible (ie, naming a 14th century Russian woman "Sasha"), you're in the clear.

Nope. If it did then there are a ton of Irish offending people with their classically Jewish names of Michael, James, Thomas, Mary and Joseph. (Go on, throw a rock in Ireland and see if you don't hit anyone with one of those names.)

Re: Stupid question about naming characters

(Anonymous) 2013-05-31 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
I suppose it depends on why it's done and how you do it, but it happens all the time in real life. I'm of Chinese descent and had a lot of Asian friends. Most of us had non-Asian first names and Asian last names, so it was extremely common to have a name like "Diana Liang" or "Angela Patel".

Frankly, I think it's offensive to assume everyone's going to have a name that matches their cultural background.
