I was wondering this too.

Have you read the fourth/fifth book? She gets dark.

Dark =/=creepy and gross

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
... that's not the same thing as creepy or gross, surely? Especially given that she kinda has a good reason for going down that path given what happened to her family.

Aside from the part where she does get much darker and creepier in the book (due in part to the fact that we can actually see inside her head, instead of just relying on a screenwriters'/actor's portrayal), she also just seems like one of those smelly kids, even by Middle Ages standards, lol. "I just bathed like a month ago!"

I mean, total kid thing, so whatever, but I can definitely see the "gross" complaint. Of course, it's also "grittily" detailed on how she has to spend some time eating grubs and wormy apples, etc., but I just chalk that up to GRRM's love of writing grody details.

I love how everyone would vaguely say "dark" but never back it up or even explain how dark equals creepy.

AYRT

Fair! I feel like "dark" is just an impression that's hard to put into words. She's already pretty dark in the series, so I'm not sure how to describe it better than I already did -- which is just that you get in her head instead of seeing what an actor can show you. A little girl so hellbent on revenge that her nighttime litany is the names of people she wants to kill is pretty dark, imo. Understandable, but horrifying to think too long about.

Not part of the prior conversation but dark to me implies sinister which can mean creepy. Arya, whether it be in the book or show, has done some pretty sinister things.

*****SPOILERS******

She's killed quite a few people, whether it be by her own hand or by ordering someone else to do so. I can't recall the guys name, but the guy with the hair that was two different colors who agrees to kill three people for her. She may not have explicitly told him so but he killed a ton of guards so she, Gendry, and Hot Pie could escape. In the book she stabs a guard in the throat to escape if I recall correctly.

Then there's the coven she joins via the coin that was pretty dark and creepy to me. The way they went around and collected the dead after the people had poisoned themselves at the temple. I dunno maybe it was just me but that sent a shiver down my spine. And Arya didn't seem disturbed by it at all.

And I'm not saying Arya is a bad person. I think she's one of the, if not THE, most fascinating characters in the book. Considering she was raised in the comforts of royalty, she has double some incredible feats to stay alive using her strength, wits, and cunning. She's done some pretty horrible things but I don't believe she is a bad person.

I don't really consider any of her murders prior to going to Braavos as horrible acts, though. Considering that during that period she was killing out of necessity, they felt justified to me.

I think it has more to do with her age in the books and her upbringing that makes them horrible. Not horrible in that she's a horrible person but just the act itself being horrific because she is SO young. She was learning swords prior to everything going to shit but she still had a very sheltered upbringing. It's pretty horrifying to see someone who was raised to be a royal woman turn into a cold killer. And as someone else pointed out, she has become completely desensitized to violence and killing, and she's only like 9 years old or something in the books. The murders may be justifiable but it doesn't change the fact its pretty horrific for someone that age to not blink twice at killing someone.
