What's your slang?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Through my own experience and various discussions, I've become interested in the various English (both US and UK) slang words/phrases.

Like, since moving to New Hampshire, I've picked up saying "wicked" ("that's wicked awesome"), and I know back in California, people would say "hella." A friend picked up "hecka" when her cousins visited from somewhere (I forget where). "Gnarly" was also around (sort of like "sick" as an "awesomely bad" kind of way), and probably a few other variations.

So, f!s, what's the slang like where you hail from? Or what other slang have you heard elsewhere? C:

Hella. I say hella. Because I'm from Northern California ("Hella" seems to be primarily Northern California, not SoCal)

I don't know if this counts as slang, but my friends and I often pronounce things with a distinctly Chicagoan accent.

Chicago-isms I use:

Garage key ("grage key")
Front room ("fronch room")
Bed room ("bedgeroom")
Ending sentences with prepositions (Wanna go with? or Where are you sitting at?)
Tendency to mush/omit words in sentences: Where are you sitting at ==> Where ya sittin' at? or What are you talking about ==> What're ya talkin' 'bout? or What do you mean? ==> What'd ya mean?
Cash station ("cashtation")
To ('ta")
Let me ("lemme")
Emphasizing /s/ sounds: looksss, booksss, rooksss
Junk Drawer ("junk djore")
I am going to ==> I'm goin' ta ==> I'm'i'na

Chicago-isms I don't use but are worth mentioning because they're funny:

I went to Jewels today.
I went to Barnes and Nobels today.

I'm from Boston, so...I say things like "Tonic" (Soda) "Clicker" (Remote) and "Pallah" (Living room)

Re: What's your slang?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
"Pallah"
Does that derive from parlor?

Indeed it does!

I'm in NH too anon!! so along with the obvious "wicked" and other new englandisms, I've noticed that there are little things not really slang but saying things like "on accident" instead of "by accident" (maybe this isn't just NH, I dunno) and pronouncing aunt as it's spelt rather than as "ant." I think this is more common in those of us of who were born and raised here though, as my mum (who is from NY) always points things like this out to me; I'd never noticed before.

I never said "hella" until I left California, now I say it all the time. I may also overuse "like" and "awesome".

My favorite slang because it confuses people outside of the South is "Bless her/his heart." Because for everywhere else it's a compliment. For the South it's a passive aggressive buffer put before an insult. As in, "Bless his heart, Billy is dumber than a box of rocks."

When we first moved to Maine when I was a child and we picked up "wicked good/cool" my cousins all used to make fun of us. Ha. I didn't know it was an outside Maine thing (cousins from MA and RI). I don't think I use it all that much anymore, come to think of it.

Um, others I can think of: housecoat (robe), icebox (refrigerator), bureau* (dresser), "spaghetti" for all pasta.

I'm sure there's more but that's all I can think of.

*I don't know if this counts as slang or what but people always give me really weird looks when I say it.

I do, too. Either that or draw (Meaning the entire dresser)

I live in Florida and I say den. That's the only weird one I can think of off the top of my head.

I've been told several times I sound Jamaican and I don't understand??? (I'm Australian)

But slang includes; yo, man, dude/dudette, sweet, ace, chill, awesome, bloody, every variation of fuck ever, "yeah, no" and "nah, yeah"s and a whole bunch of very stereotypical *bogan things I try not to say but they sneak in anyway

*Australian....rednecks I guess?

Re: What's your slang?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-01 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, Boganisms. I try not to use them... but sometimes they sneak in.

I tack "mate" on the end of thanks when I don't know someone and they've just helped me. Bugger. Bloody, fuckin baaaaaahhhhhhhhhstard, any and all combinations of swear words interspersed with stuff about sheep or shit.

Also, weird rhyming slang for food. Pass the Harold Holt.

The more bored/angry/drunk/closer to sports fields I am, the worse it gets.

I'm guilty of "bro"ing and "dude"ing around my friends. I think that may be a product of being the only girl in a large group of guys who were too immature in high school to acknowledge that I was a girl and also a friend, so I became "bro" to them. They even gave me a nickname that is my last name but ends in 'o'.

Sometimes I am guilty of pulling a faux bogan when I talk to real bogans though. Just so they don't bash me because my family are British and "erm, rather posh, terribly sorry old chap" and sometimes I slip into that.

I'm trying to think of Texas or Houston area specific slang and I'm drawing a blank.

Dunno if it's regional (I'm from WMass, went to school in Boston, live in CO now), or if I picked it up somewhere, but I measure things in fuckloads, shit-tons, (alternatively: fucktons and shitloads) and as balls.

As in : That's a fuckload of beers, I have a shit-ton of work, and it's cold as balls out here.

I started saying "hella" cause I married a Californian and he says that. I also say "dude" a lot. Mostly I just use general American slang (cool, jerk, crappy, stuff everyone says). One weird thing is that I used to call every soft drink a "coke" and now I say "soda" after moving from Tennessee to Texas. Most people here still seem to say "coke" but a good chunk of Austinites aren't from here so maybe that's why

I called HEB "heeb" and I can't really think of anything else. I can't think of specific things that Tennesseeans seem to say and most Americans don't. I used to think "thank you much" was a Tennessee thing but they say it in Texas too. I have never said "y'all" in my life unless I did it on purpose to be sarcastic or something.

Ok I thought of some

the shit, ballin' (both of these are adjectives, as in "the new Wild Nothing EP is the shit" -- "ballin'" is more a term applied to a person not a thing)
fuckass (thanks to the movie Donnie Darko)
rad
fuckton ("there's a metric fuckton of dishes piled up in here")
