Oddly enough, this. Whenever somebody says that they dislike somebody else's choice of partner... I pretty much always remember Sam Vimes and Lady Sybil

No, it wasn't meant to be contempt for the Vimes family, rather vice versa. It's just the way Pratchett describes their relationship and their personalities is freaking ridiculous (which, considering the genre, is likely what he aims for), and everything about them is awkward, but they still get together and form an awesome union because they're good for each other.

Or, if you want more obvious examples, take the girl of Nobby Nobbs (although they didn't stay together for long). Or, hell, Angua/Littlebottom. Everything in these unions is laughable from the "traditional" point of view.
