I'm the exact same! I'm never sure if I think Sirius was overall a good person or not. He had good moments, and bad moments. He was a bully, but he also fought in a war that would not have troubled him otherwise. He became an animagus to help Remus at the full moon, but then used him as a killtoy to scare the shit out of Snape (also risking Remus being expose as a werewolf). Like, he didn't think his actions through, but even 20 or so years later he still didn't regret doing that, so he didn't seem to have much respect for Remus's feelings or secrets.

Honestly I think the best part of him was his loyalty to James, Lily, and Harry, and his utter devotion for them. I just don't see that devotion or care towards Remus anywhere in the story, apart from him becoming an animagus, so it baffles me that he's almost always paired up with the friend he treated so poorly.
