I've never paid much attention to the ESC until a co-worker told me about Lordi winning a couple of years ago. I thought it was hilarious, and that when bands like that could take part and win, maybe I should watch it, too.

Did so the next time. Finland was the host (of course, because of Lordi) and they had Apocalyptica performing on the voting break. It was so much fun, I've watched every year since then. That's only three years, so far, but I'm still having fun and I'll keep watching. *g*

Bonus: When I watched it for the first time, I tried imagining all the artists as Hetalia characters. Twice the fun! *g*

I unironically love Lordi's eurovision song. <3 And the music video is pretty awesome too!

Yes! *high fives* I wished someone had told me before, so I could have watched them in the final. Good thing there's YouTube. *g*

As a Finn, the time we sent Lordi to ESC was the only time I actually liked our entry - and this was before they won, when half of the country was going "Why would we send a band like this, they will never win and will just embarrass us", as if we had a history of placing well anyway, and/or hadn't sent embarrassing acts before.

Then they won and were suddenly national darlings. The band leader's home city even renamed its central square "The Lordi Square". I happened to visit the square that same year and already there was a shop there dedicated to Lordi merchandise. I don't know how Eurovision winners are usually treated in their home countries, but I feel like Finland knew we'd never win again and celebrated accordingly.

My guess is the ESC needed some fresh air, and Lordi was different and interesting. Certainly kindled my interest in the whole thing. And I think it's awesome that they got celebrated like that!

I have to admit, I haven't paid much attention to Lena, but that's mostly because of Stefan Raab. I have no patience for that guy. But I guess he did a great job promoting her (sending her to the ESC twice!) and now she's hosting/participating in German music/tv shows.

Word. I even kinda liked her last single...

All I've really got to say is based on that website, imma go check out Lordi now.

Because those are bitchin' costumes. TELL ME WHY FINLAND HAS THAT AND I HAVE TO PUT UP WITH JUSTIN BIEBER IT'S JUST NOT FAIR.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh please do! They're in movies as well, one is named Dark Floors and the other I unfortunately don't remember.

Yay, have fun! *g*

*g* Because Finland is awesome. They also have Nightwish, Apocalyptica, Amorphis, The 69 Eyes, Children of Bodom, HIM, The Rasmus, LAB, To Die For, and so many more ♥ ♥ ♥

*cough* Sorry, couldn't resist.

Because metal is awesome, too! *g* But if you want, I can offer some Swedish or Norwegian metal bands for a change?

You've got Justin Bieber, Finland has Robin and Isac Elliot.

Dude, we have GWAR. If you just want monster suit metal, trust me there's more than Lordi out there. Hell, half of Lordi's official videos show huge influence from Meat Loaf, and their sound is often more US hard rock/metal than nordic metal. (I love Lordi. I'm just saying: they're a good distillation of things that have been done elsewhere many times.)

As for why Nordic countries are the home of metal, I don't know. Music trends are usually regional. Lordi is a lot more fun than the hate crime-committing psychos.

I really enjoyed Lordi's win. I remember being in a mass watch via a MSN conversation (because those still existed hah) and we were all wanting them to win because we thought it'd be funny such a seemingly un-Eurovision band could win this thing. So naturally when they won, we all went crazy.

One of my other favourite Eurovision moments was this song by Ukraine in 2007...

It's just so...Eurovision. But I think it lost out to Russia. I was genuinely gutted.

OMG, I remember that one! Was that really from 2007? Then I must have (accidently) watched it, or picked it up somewhere else, because I only started purposely watching after Lordi won.

I think that might be from the year Finland were hosts after Lordi won? I can't quite remember. I had a bit of a freak out because to me, that song isn't six years old! It feels like it was only on a couple of years ago.

Nope, you were totally right, it was 2007 - google is my friend. *g* Wow, I had no idea, it didn't seem that long ago to me.

DONT CARE IF THIS IS OLD I MISSED THIS POST AND LORDI IS MY FAVORITE BAND AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! I mean, I started listening to them way after their Eurovision win, but I love the story. And I hate that nobody knows who I'm talking about when I talk about them.

*g* There no time limit to replying to '(my) comments. And yay for F!S - there's clearly more of us here who know about Lordi, and you can totally talk to us.
