Did so the next time. Finland was the host (of course, because of Lordi) and they had Apocalyptica performing on the voting break. It was so much fun, I've watched every year since then. That's only three years, so far, but I'm still having fun and I'll keep watching. *g*
Bonus: When I watched it for the first time, I tried imagining all the artists as Hetalia characters. Twice the fun! *g*

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)Then they won and were suddenly national darlings. The band leader's home city even renamed its central square "The Lordi Square". I happened to visit the square that same year and already there was a shop there dedicated to Lordi merchandise. I don't know how Eurovision winners are usually treated in their home countries, but I feel like Finland knew we'd never win again and celebrated accordingly.

One of my other favourite Eurovision moments was this song by Ukraine in 2007...

It's just so...Eurovision. But I think it lost out to Russia. I was genuinely gutted.

Anyway I don't know why I was surprised that it has a following outside of Europe. I guess I may have incorrectly assumed you needed to grow up within Europe to get it because of the "it's so bad and cheesy it's good" mentality.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)Plus, even though most of the songs tend toward the mediocre, there's always an act or two in there that's genuinely entertaining, either because the song is actually good or because the performance is so over the top crazy the song doesn't even matter. If you're lucky, there's an act that has both flash and substance, and then you're on the edge of your seat for the rest of the night hoping that other countries 1. recognize that the act is in fact awesome and 2. can set aside their political alliances enough to give that act decent points.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 09:16 pm (UTC)(link)I particularly like when countries go with their language instead of choosing english. And I'm glad my country doesn't participate, we did twice and always ended last and I didn't like our entries.

I remember I got into it after finding Alexander Rybak.
OP if you enjoy the sheer hilarity groups do over having good music, you should also follow Sweden's Melodifestivalen which had this group this year which I think totally should've gone to Eurovision because why not

(Anonymous) 2013-06-03 02:04 am (UTC)(link)I don't know that I'd want an American version of it simply because we already have Idol, The Voice, and so many other singing contests that it's an oversaturated market as it is. Besides, why does America have to have a copy of everything? The rest of the world is allowed to have things of its own, too. Maybe it's just me, but Eurovision (and our weekend thing) is such a huge part of my UK experience that I wouldn't want it any other way anyway.
