I was really surprised the first time some of my US friends said they adored Eurovision. I mean, people in the UK love it in a "so bad it's good" sort of way, apart from the ones who have conspiracy theories that the rest of Europe hates us rather than most of our entries over the past few years have sucked by Eurovision standards. I actually felt our result wasn't too bad this year - I never expect the UK to win, and I remember when we DID win in the 90s!

Anyway I don't know why I was surprised that it has a following outside of Europe. I guess I may have incorrectly assumed you needed to grow up within Europe to get it because of the "it's so bad and cheesy it's good" mentality.

yeah I think people all around the world can get on board with the 'so bad and cheesy it's good' mentality

and I think it scarred me for life because I've not watched it ever since.

That and Stefan Raab are literally the only things I associate with Eurovision, it's not helping %D

Argh, der Raab. Lalalaaaaa...I can't hear you! *g* No, no, thankfully I pay more attention to the other countries' entries. And don't care much about German tv.

Except Raab's entry back then was awesome because he openly trolled the entire thing and still got into the Top Ten. Haters gonna haaate ;)

*g* Yes, Raab is a professionell and very successful troll, and sometimes even funny. But I have no patience for him. Lena is fun, though.

Woah that guy looks like he's in the wrong decade.

When we got nil points in I think 2003, and everyone blamed it on the Iraq War, I felt like one of the only people sitting there thinking "is it me...but that song was SHIT?" We deserved nil!

Woah that guy looks like he's in the wrong decade.

That's kind of his shtick. And I'm never quite sure if he's going for parody or if he is serious after all.

I don't think I would like Eurovision if I lived in Europe and grew up with it. I'm able to love it because I didn't discover it until I was old enough to appreciate things that are so bad they're good.

Possibly. I admit I went through a phase in my teens where any mention of Eurovision meant I'd roll my eyes. Then I got a little older and realised it's just a silly way to spend a Saturday night in once a year. In my experience it certainly gets a better reception online compared to if you bring it up at work or with your family (my mum really HATES it for example and doesn't get why I want to watch it.)

Eurovision is quite popular in Australia; it's shown on the "world" channel. There was some controversy when the favoured tv commenter was replaced. Must be in the "so bad it's good" category as our cheese is different.

that's also partially because of the large migrant community in Australia. I have extremely fond memories of watching eurovision within the Polish community and it was a hot topic of discussion on our multicultural youth youth program each year.

And now that I live in the UK I can watch the whole show live AND vote!
