Try Haibane Renmei, it's by the same people who made Serial Experiment Lains. It's a pretty slow character drama, but watching it unfold and the end was worth it (all main characters are girls too).

Also:
Dennou Coil (a sort of techno-punk coming of age story about a couple of kids and a dog)
Baccano! (has great jazz music and English dub like Cowboy Bebop - it's a mystery-action-adventure-drama about bunch of intertwining characters involving immortality, a train, Bonnie and Clyde with brain damage, the mafia, and a homunculus)
Azumanga Diaoh (slice of life comedy about quirky, endearing high school girls)
Mitchiko e Hatchin (about an orphan girl that actually has a mom who finds her and busts her out of her abusive foster home - hijinks ensue)

Definitely heard of Haibane Renmei and I had wanted to watch it. Azumango Diaoh sounds a bit like Lucky Star that I started watching but lost interest in so I don't know if I'll be watching it just yet.
I had never heard of Dennou Coil and Mitchiko e Hatchin. The first one sounds very interesting.

(And, admittedly, I've only seen some "full" episodes and several scenes of Azumanga Diaoh and it wasn't really my thing animation wise, but before I watched the anime I had read the manga and loved it so I wanted to give it a try. So I don't blame you for not wanting to watch it!)

I think Azumanga Daioh is a lot better than Lucky Star, even though I did like Lucky Star, too. AD has more linear storylines and the characters are a lot more likable. Definitely give it a try if you can--the manga is just adorable!
