I need new animes to watch

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
So I'm probably going to get bored for the better part of the summer and I want to watch anime. Here's a list of what I've already seen or remember I've seen:

Card Captor Sakura
Sailor Moon
Princess Tutu
Madoka
Revolutionary Girl Utena (probably all-time favorite)
Rose of Versailles
Strawberry Panic (was okay)
Marimite
Aoi Hana/Sweet Blue Flowers
Sasameki Koto (didn't like very much)
Paranoia Agent
Serial Experiment Lains
Neon Genesis Evangelion + the movies + Rebuild of Evangelion
Ore no Imouto/My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute
Welcome to the NHK
Cowboy Bebop (haven't finished yet, I don't want it to end ;__;)
Soul Eater (the first thirty episodes, lost interest after that)

I will watch anything with an interesting plot. I'm a big fan of yuri but not really up to date with the new stuff. I don't really mind if there's fanservice but if there's too much I don't really like it. Female protagonists are nice too.

So if you've got anything I'd be more than happy to give it a shot.

You're a fan of GL/yuri and female characters, but you haven't seen Simoun yet? Well then, you have an amazing series to discover!

I cannot recommend Baccano! enough. No canon yuri, sadly, but a hell of a plot (spanning at least 4 time periods), only about one fanservice scene in the whole show, and pretty much every character is a protagonist! Also, it has the world's best English dub ever. So there's that. c:

I've heard good things about Uta Kata, but I haven't gotten to it yet myself.

These are less series and more movies, but I hope they are okay too.

Paprika
The girl who leapt through time.
All the studio Ghibli stuff. Most people are familiar with Spirited away and Princess Mononoke etc, but their older stuff is great too. Whisper of the heart, Only Yesterday, Grave of fireflies, you should check 'em out. Most of these got female protags too.
Honey and Clover
Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann

Try Haibane Renmei, it's by the same people who made Serial Experiment Lains. It's a pretty slow character drama, but watching it unfold and the end was worth it (all main characters are girls too).

Also:
Dennou Coil (a sort of techno-punk coming of age story about a couple of kids and a dog)
Baccano! (has great jazz music and English dub like Cowboy Bebop - it's a mystery-action-adventure-drama about bunch of intertwining characters involving immortality, a train, Bonnie and Clyde with brain damage, the mafia, and a homunculus)
Azumanga Diaoh (slice of life comedy about quirky, endearing high school girls)
Mitchiko e Hatchin (about an orphan girl that actually has a mom who finds her and busts her out of her abusive foster home - hijinks ensue)

Any of the Slayers series are good. The newer ones are Slayers:Revolution and Slayers:Evolution-R. You can jump right into them without having seen the others, which is a plus. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2muc7M3v90

Trigun. It's an older one, but still good!

Gakuen Alice. It's a shoujo anime based off of a more darker toned manga series. The anime is more light-hearted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4RsmhOFBSUo

I remember really enjoying R.O.D the TV, but it's been a while since I watched it and I can't remember why, except that I loved some of the characters. All the main characters are female, and there's a fair amount of subtext between some of the female characters, though iirc nothing more than subtext.

Emma: A Victorian Romance is REALLY good. It's not yuri, but it's my all time favorite anime. It takes place in Victorian England (with a REALLY great attention to detail) and focuses on a maid (not a fetishy maid at all, mind you) falling in love. It's a bit subdued, but it's really lovely.

Even though I'm kind of over being an anime fan (though I loved Madoka), this series still makes me completely happy.

Also I have to recommend AKB0048 because AKB is great.

Last Exile maybe, the sequel Last Exile: Fam the Silverwing has female protagonist.

Michiko to Hatchin (female protagonists! Road trip!)
Ao no Exorcist
Working!! (a bit of yuri in that one, but mostly one-sided, slice of life)
Kemono no Souja Erin (female protagonists! Dragons!)
Seirei no Moribito (female protagonist with a spear!)
R.O.D (OAV+TV)

I recommend these every time, but Natsume Yuujinchou and Kids on the Slope (or Sakamichi no Apollon) are great shows and are beautifully animated. Kids on the Slope also has a great soundtrack (which was done by Yoko Kanno).

Ghost in the Shell.

The quintessential cyberpunk anime, and rated up their with Cowboy Bebop in the 'I don't watch anime but this is a legitimately good show' stakes.

I second the recs for Simoun and Haibane-Renmei. Both are great shows with fantastic female characters.

I also love:

- Lovely Complex (funny and cute)
- Rahxephon (mecha usually pitted against Evangelion, but they are not the same at all)
- The Good Witch of the West (fantasy)
- Mawaru Penguindrum (same creator of Utena)
- Seirei no Moribito (amazing fantasy)
- The Twelve Kingdoms (fantasy, and also has a book series translated in English)
- Le Chevalier D'Eon (like the Three Musketeers... but not)
- Kino's Journey (introspective and very beautiful)
- Mushishi (beautiful. Very nature oriented)

(Note all are female protagonist except for Mushishi, Rahxephon, and Penguindrum.)

Mai-HiME was pretty awesome, though brace yourself for a sudden tonal shift halfway through. I don't know anything about the sequel(?) series. I haven't seen a lot of magical-girl anime, but I probably would if they were all like this.

I'm also fond of Bubblegum Crisis (Tokyo 2040; I haven't seen the original). Female protagonists kicking robot ass, Iron Man style!

BLACK LAGOON

Revy is kind of like a magical girl if you replace magic with guns.

Anyway: if you liked Cowboy Bebop, I found this has some similar elements. While the dub is actually good, I highly suggest the sub because the dub really messed up the female lead's voice (she comes out of it sounding kind of generic and you lose the accent; not that she did a bad job or anything).

You might also like Kekkaishi

It's Demon Hunting Kids done right. Again, choose the sub because for some reason the dub went with EDWARD FUCKING ULFRIC for the male lead and he ONLY HAS ONE VOICE APPARENTLY

I just started watching Black Butler streaming on Netflix and love it so far.

I also watched one episode of Fruits Basket (which has a female protagonist), and it looked promising.

If you like Cowboy Bebop, I'd recommend Wolf's Rain. It's the same writing team and music team. It's a gorgeous anime that is very cerebral.

One thing to know is that many RL people I recommended it to, could not get into it until (at my insistence) they got past episode ten. The first ten episodes though necessary are slow.

You might like Bodacious Space Pirates. I know the title sounds terrible, but it's actually a pretty decent little bit of sci-fi. Besides the lead character Marika most of the cast is also female, and there is eventually a canon lesbian couple. Despite starring a cast full of schoolgirls running around in zero gravity wearing miniskirts, the series manages to be refreshingly free of fanservice.

Another good pretty recent series is From the New World/Shin Sekai Yori. I thought it started a bit slow but once it got going it really kept me impatient for more. It's based on an award-winning Japanese novel (an actual novel, not a light novel) and I really enjoyed it.

You might like

El Cazador de la Bruja - it's about a bounty hunter named Nadie who ends up biting off more than she bargained for when she agrees to protect a weird young girl named Eris. It has a neat Southwestern theme, and while it can lay it on a bit thick sometimes, it was really fun and really sweet, with a nice mix of serious drama on the side. If you've seen Noir or Madlax, this was the third project of Bee Trains "girls with guns" series, but it's much more lighthearted.

Yuris undeniably implied.

Ghost Hound - by the guy who did ghost in the shell, a paranormal psychological thriller with a neat story and fucking beautiful visuals.

Toward the Terra - TV adaptation of an old sci-fi series by the lady who is responsible for 'song of the wind and trees'. Despite what it sounds like, there are some BL vibes along the way, but they're sparse and aside from pair, hardly noticeable.

Humanity exists as part of a "Big Brother"esque society ultimately controlled by a super computer called Superior Dominance. They are at war with a group of psionically superpowered humans called the 'mu', who travel the stars in their giant spaceship searching for their ~promised land~, terra.

Tokyo Godfathers - three homeless bums--an old washed up man, an old washed up tranny, and a young runaway girl--find a baby on christmas eve thrown out in the trash. Hilarity and heartbreak and extreme sweetness ensues.

Sousei no Aquarion - Fantastic Evangelion clone with lots of good music, its own creative twist on the mecha system, and a lot of fun. Reincarnation, Angels, Giant monsters, a vampire loli! How can you go wrong?

Monster - Dr. Tenma saves a young boy, he and his sister were the survivors of a political assassination plot. Due to various circumstances, it costs him his job, and eventually leads him on a chase all across Europe, and deep into an investigation with roots back to the darkest legacies of WW2~*

Mononoke - A medicine seller traverses japan, sealing demons, solving person problems. Awesome, trippy visuals. Someone else mentioned Mushishi, and it has a strangely similar concept, but is much more supernatural.

Jigoku Shoujo - Episodic horror about a website that only appears at midnight. If you type in the name of the person you hate, Enma Ai will appear before you, and will make you an offer to carry out your grudge.

Episodic anime about people sending other people to hell, with an overarching plot that comes together through seasons one and two. It's a lot better than I make it sound.

Silent Mobius is from the late 90s and looks it, but it has a mostly female cast, lots of action, and a little yuri subtext. Also, Bubblegum Crisis 2040.
