I think the best way to think of your dash vs your blog is like your friends page vs your actual LJ/Dreamwidth page, only your posts show up on it when you decide to toss something out there as well. And then [tumblr.com/blog/INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE] is like the behind the scenes editor version of [INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE.tumblr.com], letting you both change up some posts (except for posts people have already reblogged won't reflect the edits) and track recent likes/reblogs other people have made of your stuff. [INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE.tumblr.com] is - as you've deduced - the public side of your blog.
So yeah. You can change the styling, but it'll have pretty much the same functionality you currently see.
