Tumblr thread #2 - halp! *sorry, kinda long*

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-06-02 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a Tumblr. Today, i realized for the first time it does *not* look like i thought it looked to any outside viewer.

And i have *no* idea how to fix it! I've looked at the 'free themes', and none of them have the same...functions, or whatever? that mine seems to have.

Basically - when i look at my Tumblr, I have the posted image, then at the bottom is 'share' 'reblog' and the little heart symbol so you can 'heart' that post.

But if you look at my actual Tumblr, the little heart only seem to show you notes? And I can't find a 'reblog' anywhere, unless i don't get to see that since it's 'my' Tumblr...? Or does the little heart actually do the 'heart' thing, and it's again something i don't see 'cause it's mine?

(Plus, when i look at my dashboard, or my own reblogged stuff, it's a soothing and restful dark blue. You all apparently see a very unattractive white. *sigh*)

This is me, in case you care. http://cheynelightning.tumblr.com/

The Like/Reblog is up in the right hand corner. I thought this was how it is for all Tumblrs.

Weeeeeird. Mine is at the bottom of the posted entry. Original poster/Tumblr it came from in the top left, then bottom right, the share and reblog and 'heart' options. Gah.

Now, i'm looking at a page of posts, not an individual post, if you know what i mean.

AAAAAAAND othellia just made it clearer to me, so...never mind? Sheesh. Thanks!

On pretty much everyone's individual tumblrs you can't like/reblog stuff without going to the individual post page. Once on the individual post page, like kaijin said, there's a half-transparent pop-out in the top right hand corner with all the reblogging options. There might be a couple of exceptions, but that's pretty much the way they'll work.

I think the best way to think of your dash vs your blog is like your friends page vs your actual LJ/Dreamwidth page, only your posts show up on it when you decide to toss something out there as well. And then [tumblr.com/blog/INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE] is like the behind the scenes editor version of [INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE.tumblr.com], letting you both change up some posts (except for posts people have already reblogged won't reflect the edits) and track recent likes/reblogs other people have made of your stuff. [INSERTBLOGNAMEHERE.tumblr.com] is - as you've deduced - the public side of your blog.

So yeah. You can change the styling, but it'll have pretty much the same functionality you currently see.

Hrmmmmmm. Okay. Now i just have to figure out a theme i might actually be able to tolerate. That white on white one is so...ugly.

Thanks!

You can put your own background and such on. There are some themes that left you customize a lot.

Yeah, I'm poking at one now. Trying to figure out the size i actually need on an upload for the header image. It's as fun as customizing your LJ!

Which is to say...not much. Heh.

I think you may be confusing your actual Tumblr (i.e., the page everyone sees when they type your url into the bar) with your dashboard (the blue page from which you reblog everything). When you click on your blog on your dashboard, you aren't really leaving the dashboard to go to your blog; you're just viewing your own posts on your dashboard. (Apologies if I'm explaining things unnecessarily here!)

If it makes a difference...I can't really speak for anyone else, but I very rarely reblog anything from somebody's actual blog--95% of the time, I'd only see your post on my dashboard, and reblog it from there. And if I was trying to reblog/like something on your actual blog, I'd have no trouble clicking on the post and then using the links in the upper right corner.

But if you want to change the look of your actual Tumblr, you could try looking at more themes. A lot of themes do include reblog/like buttons on the blog itself (rather than just on the pages of individual posts). http://thewicked-eternitythemes.tumblr.com/ has some nice ones which are all free; you might be able to find something you like better there.

Or http://zeldathemes.tumblr.com/tagged/zeldatheme

Or http://icatchingfire.tumblr.com/tagged/themes

Yeah, i finally get that. I don't have much opportunity to see other people's Tumblrs, or how it looks to *them*, so i had no clue. And mostly i'm just over there looking at who i'm following and reblogging, not digging down into the whole mess of themes and customization (kinda like lj).

So i think i might actually have a handle on it now! I just...was very dismayed at how amazingly ugly my Tumblr was when you weren't *me*. (Cause i like the blue. :))

Thanks!
