I guess I'm the only asshole here. I don't think there is a need to make a community based on images accessible to people who can't see.

I get the intent to make everything accessible to everyone but I think turning fandom into work is more detrimental than helpful. I would certainly change my mind if it turned out there are thousands of blind people who want to use F!S, but that's statistically unlikely.

Nope, you are not alone. And you said it much nicer than I was going to, so thanks for that.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree. It's a nice thought, but really, the pictures are the entire point of f!s, and it sounds like a lot of work.

I agree.

I think it's a question of proportion.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-02 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree. I love submitting secrets and having discussion about them. But I wouldn't bother with FS anymore if I had to write descriptions of the images I submitted. And even if someone else wrote the descriptions, having them posted under each picture would make the posts look very messy.

Agreed. Maybe if there's demand for it, but I'm not sure how we'd even know. Maybe blind users contacting case?

Not alone.

Not a lot of blind people around, but a lot of people whom have bad eyesight, or is colourblind for that matter.

I will not go on a crusade saying we have to get everything transcribed, but there are more than just the smal percentage of blind people on the internet whom have trouble reading the secrets on here.

But, correct me if I'm wrong, this isn't talking about reading the secrets it's talking about adding written descriptions for what the picture is.

Which would help those whom have trouble reading the secrets... Actual descriptions of what the pictures is showing would not be the beneficial to most of the users on here.

But, yeah rereading the secret you are probably correct, though a transcription of the picture would also have the text on it wouldn't it? Or is it me and my ESL that are misstaking what transcriptions really are?

NA

I believe a transcription of the secret is just conveying the text, and doesn't require describing the image at all.

Agreed. The entire point of the community is images, not text. Hell I have 20/20 vision and there have been plenty of times when even I haven't been able to read some of the secrets that have been submitted, how do you propose that people transcribe secrets like that, that are next to impossible to read even for normally-sighted people?

I don't hard-code fonts or do other stuff to make my fic harder to read. I don't care about making f!s accessible. Any kind of mandatory transcription is not worth it. (Though if all those people volunteering actually do transcriptions, fair enough.)
