Then start transcribing the images yourself? Nobody is stopping you.

Personally I think that is too much to expect of Case, especially when he doesn't even know the fandoms in the pictures half of the time. He's already spending a lot of time running this thing, at some point you just have to accept he cannot offer everything you want without burning himself out in two weeks.

Well, in theory he could ask for a transcription to be submitted with the secret, which would take care of what I imagine would be the most time-intensive part.

Some things like this have description under the picture.

like for the secret below: "A man in a suit and a slightly confused expression on his face stares off screen to the right. Text reads: My friend blah blah blah." They have programs that will read off the text to them so they can know what the picture is of.

I agree in theory; in practice, it's a huge task. I wonder if it's a section that could be added and then edited by an army of volunteers.

I think it would definitely take some effort, perhaps a team of people who generally get to F!S early on, but it would be a nice thing to do if we could work it out.

Shouldn't that be "secret because" rather than "S!B"? "S exclamation mark B" sounds weird when you actually hear it.

I think that's a good idea, but I don't know how people would go upon doing that. I mean, F!S relies heavily on background images. Would it be better if people did like headers for secrets? Like "Naruto: image contains Sasuke, Sakura, and Sai." Like it would at least give a basis of what's in the picture. Or even always mentioning the fandom would help (but that might ruin a few secrets).

I guess I'm the only asshole here. I don't think there is a need to make a community based on images accessible to people who can't see.

I get the intent to make everything accessible to everyone but I think turning fandom into work is more detrimental than helpful. I would certainly change my mind if it turned out there are thousands of blind people who want to use F!S, but that's statistically unlikely.

Just out out curiosity, how much of a demand is there for transcriptions for blind users in F!S? Are there any blind users? Does anyone know of any blind who would start using F!S if this service were put in place?

I mean seriously, isn't this the kind of blatant mockery of other secrets that normally gets a "Take it to comments"? Everyone's responding as if it were a serious secret, and I'm baffled.

I don't have any visual difficulties (that aren't solved by glasses) but some secrets are flat-out difficult to read due to font and background.

I don't think it'd be difficult to implement this as long as we ask future submitters to also include a transcription of their text--hopefully in most cases this'll be as easy as them cutting and pasting their word walls.

Something simple like

Picture of Sherlock, text: "I have an undying hatred of Benedict Cumberbatch that borders on the fetishistic"

Keep it simple, but useful. There's actually a bot on reddit that transcribes meme pictures somewhat like this.

Can we please not throw the word 'nazi' around so casually

How about people can add alt text when submitting the secrets, there is an additional comment thread where the descriptions/transcriptions go and volunteers can add them for the secrets that don't have alt text?

That shouldn't be too much additional work for case.

I have this niggling feeling we had this secret before a few years ago. That or I am completely imagining things.

Either way, if someone wants to volunteer to transcribe I won't stop them. I don't expect Case to do it because he does so much already. If someone wants to put some sort of system in place that would be cool too. I dunno. This is all up in the air right now.

After reading these comments I am grateful for what eyesight I have.

It must really suck to be considered a burden, a cause for extra work because of something you cannot help when you want to enjoy what others are enjoying.
