Just out out curiosity, how much of a demand is there for transcriptions for blind users in F!S? Are there any blind users? Does anyone know of any blind who would start using F!S if this service were put in place?

...yeah, these are kind of important questions.

Given the paucity of sercrets, how much of a demand is there for F!S itself these days?

Weekend in June, dude.

Maybe not blind, but I have awful eyesight and some secrets I can't read because of the size of the text or the colours used, but I can see the background image, so if I don't recognise it I wont even bother trying to read it. Especially since it takes a lot of energy to concentrate hard enough to understand the text and it is not worth the headache.

I have the same problem on tumblr. what is the point of using tiny fonts?

Then again, it isn't an huge problem for me, but I would imagine there are some users on F!S with worse eyesight than me.

Press cntrl and + at the same time it enlarges the picture and text. Cntrl and - makes it smaller. Mostly problem solved now (no colour blind tricks here).

That only makes the picture bigger, not clearer... So sometimes that helps, but usually it just makes it even more unreadable.

THank you though Anon!

Same here. I can strain my eyes and read some of them (also highlighting the picture as if it was text helps sometimes), but that's probably not healthy to do so often and most of the time I just don't bother.

Oh I have never tried that! Thanks for the advice Anon!

I'm curious too. Someone has already created an account to post transcriptions which is pretty neat imo, so I hope those will be useful to someone.

(I have no idea about these things. Even if OP was a troll, no harm done.)

Someone will probably get bored with it by next week. Lot of work, zero thanks.

That's a possibility. If it happens someone else might take up the challenge, or it might just fall by the wayside. We'll just have to wait and see.

(There are several people in this thread who have mentioned vision problems so maybe it will do some actual good. In that case I hope people appreciate transcription anons work.)

I'm red/green colour blind and I only have problems reading secrets maybe 5-6 times a year. As I've been following f!s for long before the move to dreamwidth, I really don't know how new people are coming to the community these days, and really how many new people interested in joining are visually impaired...

If users wanted to provide transcriptions on a voluntary basis, it can't hurt.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-03 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm only vision impaired as opposed to full on blind, so there's certainly some I've struggled to read but I've found FS is great if I just go "I can't read this one, what does it say".

I have blind friends! I pretty much just have to repost a secret to my journal with a homemade alt-text transcription if I want to discuss a secret with them, because otherwise, they're not going to have any idea what it says.

Transcriptions are also awesome because I can refresh my memory of which secret is what without having to scroll up or open the image link in a new tab.

i would. i can't make secrets. But i do enjoy them a lot when people transcribe them. i'm just one person though.
