popular bands you always dismissed but are actually awesome

[personal profile] dethtoll 2013-06-03 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Where have Queens of the Stone Age been all my life? I'd always just kinda thought of them as another generic MTV "alt-rock" band. But the other day a friend of mine linked me to the video for "If I Had A Tail" and I pretty much dove in headfirst. You know what it reminds me of is a more mainstream Acid Bath/Dax Riggs (hence why they're both in the music thread today.)

What're some bands you always just kinda went "meh" at until you finally actually sat down and listened to them?

Which albums of theirs do you recommend? I listened to "Bleach" but was disappointed because the way the songs are sung makes the lyrics almost inaudible.

Bleach does take some getting used to, yeah! But it really grew on me after a while. In Utero is my favorite, and I think Unplugged is the most intelligible of the lot. And nice to listen to overall.

But, his voice might just not be your thing, and that's okay! From what I've seen, it's kinda polarizing.

The cover of "The Man Who Sold the World" on Nirvana's "Unplugged" is much better than the original in my opinion and I realize that sounds crazy because realistically David Bowie is the more talented musician and songwriter (not that I think Kurt Cobain is terrible), but just hearing that particular rendition, and hearing it from Kurt Cobain, the lyrics were more relevant and powerful. You get the sense that Bowie wrote the song about someone else and that someone else was Cobain because the song described him so perfectly

Also I guess I'm just into acoustic versions of songs idk

I think it's a lot better than original, too, but I admit I'm biased because the original just isn't my kind of music. :P

But yeah, I think all of their covers, especially the Unplugged ones, are totally awesome. He really had a way of making a song his own, I think.

Okay, I do think "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" was best performed by Mark Lanegan. But the Nirvana version is great, too. They both have really expressive voices.

When I was in middle school I hated them (this was right before Cobain died and right after that they were on the radio all the damn time and I hated it) but when I got to college I started to appreciate them

U2. I listened to some of their greatest hits and found those pretty meh, then wondered why this band is so recognized. Not long ago, I clicked on a link on facebook to their "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" and was blown away by both the song and the lyrics.

U2 and REM and a few other 80s college radio bands are kinda like that, but I blame the fact that they became so mediocre later on. I don't see how anyone could listen to Boy and not like U2 at least a little bit. The concert footage of them from back around '81 is amazing and makes me wish I had time travel abilities

I love U2. Unlike you a lot of their greatest hits do it for me, but they have a huge catalog of songs (so I imagine it wouldn't be hard for most people to find SOMETHING they like) and imo some of them are extremely impressive.

I felt the same thing about "Sunday, Bloody Sunday". I was pretty meh about them until I heard that song and then BAM I get it now.

The Byrds. I never really thought much of them until recently when I got really into Gene Clark and realized how great of a songwriter he was and then I started listening to them more intently. Same with a lot of 70s country rock kinda stuff I heard all the time growing up, like Crosby Stills Nash and Young, CCR, that kind of thing

scuse me while i unload some cathartic atonement for my hipstery ways when i was younger

P!nk - for some reason i never liked her when she was starting out, but then a couple of years ago i heard her new stuff on the radio and now she's possibly one of my favorite artists. she's badass, incredibly talented, and above all seems to be a pretty great human being.

Tori Amos - couldn't stand her for years, then suddenly i listened to winter and i couldn't stop crying. there's some albums that are totally hit and miss for me, but she's got a solid body of music that i love.

Marilyn Manson - when he first came out i thought he was amusing, but he kind of hit me in the category of obnoxious noise. then somewhere around 2006 i listened to his cover of Sweet Dreams, and it was great. there's a lot of songs i don't care about, but when he hits his high not, he does what he does really well.

Hole - my older brother and sister were big nirvana fans, so i always kind of thought courtney love was awful, and i listened to them when they said all she made was gross terrible music. the first song i really heard of theirs was hit so hard, then violet, awful, and by the time i heard malibu and dying i was in love.

Tom Jones - grew up thinking he was old, embarrassing, and lame. listened to some other stuff of his my mother had downloaded, and man, some of his songs are hokey as fuck, but they're FUN and his voice is a treasure.
