I get it. I have this problem with a lot of shows (Grimm, Sherlock, this one) and it gets a little grating after a while. :/

Oh, Sherlock, I have so much headcanon to explain why Lestrade is a top detective despite massive incompetence.

"I deduce that this is a fork"

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, OP. If it helps, though, a lot of what should have been there was there in the original pilot script. If NBC had shot it at full length and let it run an extra half hour when it debuted, instead of having it cut down to make the hour running time, everything in the pilot would have made better sense.

I haven't watched Hannibal so I don't know what your gripe with it is, but I feel that way about the policework in The Following. Even putting aside the extreme police brutality (and there is a disturbing amount of it, so that's not easy at all), the scene where they had a wire on a woman and she said her safeword like six times and they never intervened?! I get they were trying to follow a suspect with her, but still. D: D: D:

If you hadn't mentioned The Following I would have. The particular scene you mention was just awful and all kinds of wrong.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 12:19 am (UTC)(link)
The Following was a bit of a joke in many ways. Just... they're telling me Carol managed to build an internet following from within jail and no one found out? And then after the third time it turns out he had someone working on the inside you'd think the FBI would do something about preventing that.

And when the woman who's name I forget was buried alive... and then it turns out she had her phone with her and it was capable of receiving calls? :|

Yeah, it's jarring. I'm not far into the series, but I'm already baffled that it was suggested that Hannibal would do a therapy session with Will, even though they were BOTH on that crime scene. Wtf, that can't be right...

This is how I feel about so many shows.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with you, but I feel this way about all cop shows, to some extent? Just like medical shows are unwatchable if you know a few things about medicine and how war movies are unwatchable if you're an actual soldier and so on, because things are never done RIGHT on shows/movies. So how do you manage to watch anything then? I have a few cops in the family, so I'm really aware of how WRONG the shows get it, but I just accept it just like I accept fake!medicine and fake!warfare and fake!martial arts.

This. I wracked my brain trying to think of a fictional show that portrays law enforcement with some degree of accuracy but I couldn't think of a single one.

I had to stop watching one of my favourite shows with my nurse and radiologist friends, because they kept on freaking out every time a character was told to turn off their phone while in the emergency department.

Radiologist friend says she lets people answer their phones while she's giving them x-rays.

~every~ episode is full of shoddy police work. also I like how the behavioral science unit is apparently devoid of actual competent agents who can do this work, and thus need to rely on will graham for everything

or this past week, when they got called in on a single murder where it was readily apparent the murderer knew the victim? yeah, I'm sure local PD were thrilled to give that over to FBI jurisdiction for absolutely no reason.

Dear God, this. The episode where Will finally told off Jack on relying on him made me very happy, even if he backtracked two seconds later. He was completely right. For goodness sakes, they have a whole unit of competent people who supposedly are good at catching criminals, and the friggin head of the department is relying on one man who can barely be qualified as sane.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Well I did say I couldn't get over the pilot. I haven't been able to get through the first 5 minutes of the second episode, and now probably never will.

The policework continually gets worse with each episode. I've just kind of come to accept that in order to enjoy watching Mads Mikkelsen scheme internally for an hour each week, I will have to set aside about five minutes per episode in order to flip tables in regards to how shitty the policework is.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
The show doesn't appeal to me at all. So I'm glad to see that I'm not missing much.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Pilots are always much more terrible than the actual show is. And the policework is really not what the show is about; the show is about Hannibal and Will Graham's bizarre relationship.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, it wasn't just me and the other characters are *meant* to be window dressing?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 07:21 am (UTC)(link)
That isn't really a valid reason to be sloppy, though.

It’s a good looking show with some interesting characters, but I just can’t get over the SHODDY POLICEWORK in the pilot.

(Pic of someone from Hannibal holding/looking at a fork and eating; I don’t know who but I recognize him from other Hannibal secrets)

Is there a police show on tv, ever, that has realistically portrayed police work? This seems like a weak thing to criticize a show on, considering.

The law, police work, medicine, even on an emergency ward, is rarely as exciting or as fast paced as it is in shows and so I accept a certain amount of dramatic license because it would be a bit like watching paint dry if they tried to capture exactly what real life policing etc. is like. But there are times when the dramatic licenses taken are just too unnecessarily shoddy or too ridiculous that they end up putting me off a story so I feel your pain OP.
