I think they're just not popular because they're not 'cute'. The popular choices are usually the cute and aesthetically pleasing Pokemon.

I never used Arbok or even Ekans because I'm not really into Poison-type Pokemon, but I'm pretty sure I remember Beedrill as being able to hold his own pretty well. They're your Pokemon, nobody can tell you which to use :3

:/ Not sure I agree with this. SOME people prefer cute ones, but most people I know prefer Pokemon that are tough (which generally doesn't intercept with "cute" in the world of Pokemon, though it depends.)

They are cute to me but I admit I've never really used them as part of my team.

I think the point above about toughness is valid too, and type plays a big role, so many people have their preferred types. For me it's usually a combination of how well the pokemon fights, it's type, and how much I like the design.

I'm also not really into poison type pokemon (they usually don't suit the way I fight.) I'm not into bug pokemon either because they're too easily taken down and I find I rarely need them and can easily replace them with some other type.
