'90s hair and clothes

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Does anyone ever get nostalgic (or just amused) when they watch '90s TV shows and movies and see all these characters who are supposed to be stylish and good-looking, but sport what are now considered really silly haircuts and clothes? Do any of you older members remember thinking those haircuts and clothes looked good back during the '90s?

/been on a marathon of revisiting '90s sitcoms all week long, so many memories :)

This is pretty much standard for any past decade's style.

No. In fact I haaaated the '90s clothes. Then again, I am a child of the '80s so I got absolutely zero room to talk smack about the '90s clothes/hair.

I still have a thing for flannel shirts and bleached jeans.

You can pry my flannel from my cold, dead hands. AND MY HANDS WILL ALWAYS BE WARM. BECAUSE FLANNEL.

Ugh. No, I hated 90's clothing when I was a kid. Especially the colossal raver/skater/punk pants. I swear, they were two teepees held up by a belt.

The only good thing about 90's clothing was the very strong DIY element. So, instead of buying a shirt was a design on it, you grabbed your sharpies or fabric markers and went to town. You slapped patches on everything. You repurposed everything. That old tin lunch box that haven't used since you were in third grade? Slap some Rancid and Hole stickers on it and VIOLA! It's your new purse. Arts and crafts wasn't just a hobby, it was a way of life.

Most past fashions of the 1900's are atrocious to me. Goes doubly for the fashion AND the decor of the 60's and 90's.

Clarissa Explains It All is the worst offender imo. I was too young for its original run but have since seen reruns, and every outfit is just a big no.

I remember being a kid and watching Clarissa Explains It All and thinking she was the coolest person in the universe.

As a 90s child, I was confused by the fashion. It was terrible. Then again, I was also immune to cool kid advertising too. Maybe if I was a teenager I would have thought it all fashionable?

I have a soft spot for '90s hair/clothes because I was raised on '90s TV well into the 2000s. Men's fashion was a lot better than womens' though. I still think grunge flannel is a good look on guys. And those silly curtained hairstyles are super-cute too, as long as the guy wearing it is definitely in the '90s. :D

What do you mean in particular? Which haircuts?

I always get nostalgic when thinking about the past. I remember buying my first music single as a kid, in the 90s - 2 Unlimited "No Limit".

But truth to be told, I wish I was born in the sixties so I could have been a young adult in the 80s. Dirty Dancing, shoulder pads (haha), walking around like Madonna in "Into the Groove".

Dude. I was born in the '70s and I enjoyed all of those things as a teenager in the 80s. XD You would NOT have had to be born in the '60s, trust me. And if you were, you probably would have ended up Kiefer Sutherland's character in the movie "Flashback."

...aaaaaaand now I feel old. :-P

I was born in the very early 80s, and I enjoyed most of those things, too! I totally had a few sweaters with shoulderpads and I thought they were the coolest. I was always more of a Cyndi Lauper girl, but I still did a lot of dancing around to Madonna.

I bet OP means Rachel's haircut from Friends. That haircut was everywhere. I was so jealous because at the time, my hair basically was so thin it looked like squirrels had been gnawing on it (not the right texture for the Rachel) but my BFF had this perfectly thick, coarse hair that could exactly copy the 'do. She looked awesome.

I'm still jealous that I never had the chance to wear 90s fashion when it was actually in fashion. I spent my whole childhood thinking "I can't wait until I'm grown-up enough to wear cool clothes like that" and then once I was old enough to buy my own stuff, all the styles were different.

Well, if you had been able to wear any of those clothes you would've realized how uncomfortable they were. Bodysuits with snaps in the crotch (really, who wants to deal with that when using the bathroom), acid-washed jeans that felt really rough on the skin and were pleated in the front and relaxed in the wrong places but really tight around the ankles? It was a horrorshow

I kind of like the revival of 90s fashion trends because this time they are doing it right. Like acid-washed jeans that are like, a print rather than actual acid-wash (or are at least softer fabric so it doesn't irritate the skin) that come in slimmmer cuts that flatter the body rather than MOM JEAN STYLE ONLY (I know a lot of people hate skinny jeans but I love them and I really don't think they look bad on anyone, legs were meant to be seen). Also some of the prints and colors but again, different tailoring and fabrics, etc. I really like a lot of the floral prints I'm seeing now

Oh, jeeze. I was a kid in the 90's and I remember owning/wearing floral printed pants with jellies and a windbreaker jacket that was neon red/yellow/green/pink. LOL. So badddddd.

I love flannel, though.

my friend used to complain about clarissa's wardrobe (from nickelodeon's clarissa explains it all) and i was all like "no way, her clothes are awesome!"

now i cringe

The 70s, young person. You don't know what horror is until your grow up in a decade of true and profound fashion atrocities while having just enough taste to understand (during said decade) that the Brady family are the Spawn of Psychedelic Satan.

I was so glad when the 80s came in, I just can't tell ya.

Yes every single time. Marathoning 90's sitcoms sounds like a great way to spend your days.
