I mourn more for the open discussions of metafandom more than I do for fanficrants. But yes, I do actually remember a time when fanficrants was actually a lot more lighthearted in general, and not the SJ-bingo-card-point-collecting bonanza that it is now.

I miss metafandom too! There was a point when nearly all the articles were SJW-related and it was never the same again.

That's probably what killed metafandom, all the SJW stuff. It got so sterile with all those posts requiring a hyper-precise protocols of what to say and what not to say.
