I thought "...tard" was a way for haters to refer to a group of fans who, in their eyes, behave like little shitheads and are generally annoying? You know, as an insult? Why would you want to refer to yourself like that? Or is it th same bulldhit as those womyn who think they must "claim bitch for themselves" when it's a fucking insult, why would you want to "claim" and insult to refer to yourself?

Fun fact: I'm not a native speaker, so back in the day, I confused the "tard" with "turd" and because of that always thought it was "Naruturd" - as in piece of shit who likes Naruto. I liked that version better.

I think partly you're right, but also I think some reffered to themselves as such in a self-deprecating way and some just jumped on the bandwagon and used it because other were using it. But I've never been in the Avatar fandom so I'm just guessing.
I'm confused about 'bitch' as well. The BDSM setting aside, I don't see why anyone would call themselves that. In my experience it's mainly women thinking "I'm a self-proclaimed bitch now I can behave like an asshole and be mean to people."
