SJW get rid of that term, too? What's the newest term for Avatar fans?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-04 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
God-willing, "Avatar fans". Some of us don't want fucking ableist slurs to announce we're fans of the show.

So keep using it, Avatard. Let no one stop you.

I like "Zutard" for a certain subset of Zutara shippers.

Go fuck yourself.

Wow, that was really stupid and assholish of me to say. I'm sorry.

(Yes, this is the same anon, and yes, I'm being sincere...sleep puts things in perspective.)

Grumpy Cat would hate this.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Lol. Took me years to feel like watching this show.

....And now I'm marathoning it. In fact, guess what my plans are tonight.

On the upshot the fandom seems alive and well.

Doug Walker (Nostalgia Critic) is doing an Avatar the Last Airbender Vlog where he is reviewing all the episodes.

It's probably better that the word remain used only rarely. I've noticed that fandoms that actually come up with popular terms to refer to themselves, quickly get that word hijacked by people outside the fandom in order to refer to the worst parts of the fandom.

It's probably happened before this but I first noticed it with Trekkies in the 80's what used to be a term used by fans to refer to each other in almost any circumstance became a derogatory moniker that people used to refer to the stereotypical morbidly obese virgin basement dweller as well as the completely obsessed variety of fan that learned klingon and treated the show as a lifestyle rather than the fandom. Even to this day there are still portions of the fandom that split over words like trekky versus trekker or just star trek fan.

The next case would be furries of course, despite the term starting out to try and include fans of really any type of anthropomorphic media it's since been hijacked to refer to the kinds of people who dress up in fursuits and have sex. This association has gotten to the point where I have had multiple friends who believe the word Furry refers solely to people who participate in the sexual side of the fandom.

More recently there has been blowback against people calling themselves gamers and people outside of videogames associating the word with the most hateful, misogynistic, and elitist parts of the community.

And most recently there are the bronies. I'm sure you already know where I'm going with this, even on this site there are people who have basically hijacked the word to fit with their catch all impression of the worst parts of the fandom.

Universal terms for fandoms tend to turn out very poorly as they give people a term to focus all their hate on and warp their perceptions of the fandom way out of proportion with reality. It really does get tiring watching the internet hyperbole machine continuously distort fandoms terms for itself in order to once again try and convince everyone what terrible people "insert fandom here" all are.

I hate having cutesy names for a group of fans of one particular fandom. Especially when they denote craziness or stupidity or, in this case, have a really icky ableist slant to them. I want to just be a fan of something, not a monster or a 'tard or a 'wife.

I'm not in the fandom but I think cutesy names are stupid. They annoy me. I wouldn't mind them so much if they didn't have ableist connections to them, though. I just don't understand why I can't be a fan of X instead of a Ytard, Zfag, etc.

I did lol at Twihard back when that was a thing, but it rings more of diehard fan than anything strictly ableist.

I thought "...tard" was a way for haters to refer to a group of fans who, in their eyes, behave like little shitheads and are generally annoying? You know, as an insult? Why would you want to refer to yourself like that? Or is it th same bulldhit as those womyn who think they must "claim bitch for themselves" when it's a fucking insult, why would you want to "claim" and insult to refer to yourself?

Fun fact: I'm not a native speaker, so back in the day, I confused the "tard" with "turd" and because of that always thought it was "Naruturd" - as in piece of shit who likes Naruto. I liked that version better.

I always thought there was a certain irony that the one who popularized the abelist slur fandom term (Isaia, was it?) ended up or had always been a SJW-ish type.
