Awesome and interesting elderly characters

(Anonymous) 2013-06-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm kind of sad that young characters hog all the attention in fandom. Yeah, a big part of it is shipping, but even in the non-shipping sections of fandom, characters who are nearing or in old age tend to be either ignored of just taken at face value and left unexplored. Especially if they're not physically badass or hot.

What are some some old (lets say 60-ish and over) characters that you find both awesome and really fascinating and would love to discuss more?

The first two that come to mind are Ichikawa (from Akagi) and Higgins (from Magnum PI). Though the latter was hardly left unexplored by canon -- to my great joy!

Older Spock (but maybe he doesn't count?)

I think it definitely counts, considering I watched the movie solely for his sake.

Lady Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones, the actress they got to play her is superb and I highly enjoy every moment she is on screen, I could watch her scheme for hours.

Bernard and Rose from LOST. My favorite couple from that show bar none.

Speaking of older characters, there's a Dutch remake of Golden Girls that came out not to long ago. Despite not speaking a lick of Dutch, many words are so similar to English that it's not that hard to follow along. I don't know about you but it's not the same without Betty White.

Basically all the older characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender, notably Iroh and King Bumi. We used to call the White Lotus the Awesome Old Man Brigade.

Talking about older characters is pretty much all I do in fandom...

Esmerelda Weatherwax and Gytha Ogg from Discworld are two of the greatest characters in the world.

Minerva McGonagall is the queen of HP to me, and I don't understand why Snape gets all the love when Minerva's right there being twenty times cooler, sassier and more awesome than even the snarkiest of fandom!Snapes.

I'm not really into BBC's Sherlock that much, but Una Stubbs' Mrs Hudson is a complete joy, and they should use her more and there should be way more fanfic.

Marilla Cuthbert - you could make an argument that the first Anne of Green Gables book is as much her story as Anne's. Relatively little fic or meta or even scholarship about her too though.

Most of the cast of 20th Century Boys after any of the given time-skips. Women, men, you got it.

Come to think of it, Naoki Urasawa's works tend to be centered around older casts.

Arnold's grandma from Hey Arnold!

It really bothered me that she didn't receive much character development and most of Arnold's family interaction was with his boring grandpa. His grandma was hilarious and a badass.

Roland Deschain. Saul Tigh, Bill Adama, Laura Roslin. Pinako Rockbell. Tenar in the sequels to Earthsea.
Seconding/thirding Iroh and the rest of the White Lotus Society, and Minerva McGonagall.

(and a brief mention of Aragorn b/c he's definitely over 60... but for Dunedain that doesn't mean what we think it means...)

Although my heart quails at calling any of these characters elderly, I'd say George Hammond and Catherine Langford from SG-1; Bill Adama, Laura Roslin, Saul and Ellen Tigh from BSG (I can't quite put my finger on an age for the four of them; they're approaching 60 if not there already); all the older characters in HP but particularly McGonagall; I think Richard Woolsey and Steven Caldwell from SGA/SG-1 are probably supposed to be in their fifties but awesome characters; Ben Sisko's dad from DS9; Sarek and Amanda from TOS; Spock!Prime in the reboot.

Okay, I wouldn't call them elderly, but

Frank Reagan from Blue Bloods (Tom Selleck does not look 68)

I actually have no idea how old Gibbs from NCIS is supposed to be, but Mark Harmon is over 60 and awesome. Of course, Gibbs does actually get a fair amount of fandom attention.

Mrs. Frederic and Artie from Warehouse 13

Hetty from NCIS:LA is quite awesome (but I think everybody knows that).

And I love Martha from Castle.

Torogai, the Yaku shaman from Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

Pinako Rockbell from Fullmetal Alchemist.

Alfred from Batman.
manifold: The Horsehead Nebula, a dark nebula in the constellation Orion. (horsehead nebula)

GITS's Chief Daisuke Aramaki. Especially in SAC, where he has more characterization.

The elderly couple that own the bookstore in Persona 3. They are adorable. They have a sad history but they are still cheerful and friendly and are still very romantically involved and just precious as fuck.

I don't think Gone-Away Lake and its sequel, Return to Gone-Away, have a fandom, but Minnehaha Cheever and Pindar Peyton, the two elderly siblings who live by the shore of the dried-up lake, were all kinds of awesome. I loved their resourcefulness--they made their solitary life in a ghost town seem so cool--and their fund of stories.

And I second the praise of Marilla Cuthbert and wish Lucy Maud Montgomery had written a book about her life at Green Gables after Anne had left.
