Re: Awesome and interesting elderly characters

Talking about older characters is pretty much all I do in fandom...

Esmerelda Weatherwax and Gytha Ogg from Discworld are two of the greatest characters in the world.

Minerva McGonagall is the queen of HP to me, and I don't understand why Snape gets all the love when Minerva's right there being twenty times cooler, sassier and more awesome than even the snarkiest of fandom!Snapes.

I'm not really into BBC's Sherlock that much, but Una Stubbs' Mrs Hudson is a complete joy, and they should use her more and there should be way more fanfic.

Marilla Cuthbert - you could make an argument that the first Anne of Green Gables book is as much her story as Anne's. Relatively little fic or meta or even scholarship about her too though.

So 100% agreed with you on McGonagall and Marilla! Two of my favorite fictional characters ever. Also, thanks for reminding me that I really do need to start on Discworld at some point.

And so damn real feeling too. That a real strength of a character - they leave you with the feeling that the author based them off a real person they knew and that you know too through the writing. Like, you know how sometimes, the characters' reactions and your reaction sync up perfectly? I recall that one of the most vivid instances of that happening to me was in DH, with Harry losing it more hardcore than he had in any other point in the entire series when Amycus spit in her face.

Yes, yes, yes to Marilla Cuthbert!!! I wish there were fanfic about her life with Rachel after Anne had left Green Gables. Not necessarily femslash, even--just stories that depicted two aging women affectionately and depicted them having interesting lives would be awesome.
