I'm starting to wonder if internet space is even for me anymore

(Anonymous) 2013-06-06 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Its bad enough that I occasionally see shrill screaming from tumblr folk about issues they haven't researched or have misinterpreted, but to see it on my flist breaks my heart.

Where is the logic that one gross thing = disgusting asshole?

Some parts of tumblr are just nuts and not representative of most of the internet. Just sayin.

It's not logic. They just don't know how to critique gross things in a mature way, so their solution is to paint the person who did it as a disgusting asshole and villify them and revel in their hatred and venom towards that person, because it's easier and more satisfying to do that than to be venomous towards a generalized "issue".

Oh dear. Did some privileged cisgendered rape apologist use a problematic word again?

I don't even bother to pay attention to the constant overreacting anymore. It's just so easy for some people to be complete idiots when talking about someone they are never going to meet IRL. At least I hope that they wouldn't behave like that when meeting someone face to face.

I read that as 'on your fist' and was slightly confused.

Do you think there's a legit point somewhere in there, or are they just going off.

yeaah my sister's a tumblr SJW. I mean, I get a lot of what she's saying, but sometimes I get a little bit tired of everything. It's gotten to the point where I always have to watch what I say, otherwise it might be construed as against something or another. Apparently (according to her) saying "as long as you're healthy" in regards to fat acceptance is both fat shaming and ableist.

I don't even know anymore.

Yeah I don't even know. That's what I tend to say, that being healthy is what matters most, but apparently people's health is their own business and it's also ableist.

Re: I'm starting to wonder if internet space is even for me anymore

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
The only way my mind can make sense of this is: unhealthy people are disabled.

Which...what the fuck.

Sometimes, I think that SJWs are actually offensive themselves in the sense that they take the actual struggles of actual oppressed or maligned groups and try their damnedest to apply them to situations where they don't fit. In so doing, they ultimately contribute to marginalization, in the sense that actual instances of prejudice get lost in all the fluff and wind up being ignored or not taken seriously.

It's a terrible irony.

Yeah, I completely disagree with it too. It's kind of ridiculous. I mean, I don't think it's a bad thing to say that trying to be healthy is a good thing?

Yeah, definitely agree with the rest of your comment. I love my sister and I think she's trying her best, but is going too far.

Well, if people's health as their own business is the point, I actually think that makes sense. Like, even if the only thing standing between someone and good health is their two-dozen-Krispy-Kreme-a-day habit, it's not really my problem unless it affects me personally.

But then, wouldn't I only know what the problem was if I were close enough to them for it to affect me personally? I'm guessing most people saying "as long as you're healthy" aren't close to the person and are using it to mean that they don't really care.

And anyway, isn't health a pretty relative concept? I have a few chronic conditions but still consider myself healthy. Even someone with a visible disability or some really awful disease could consider themselves healthy if they felt they had it under control. I would consider "as long as you're healthy" in the context of weight to mean that a person's weight is fine as long as they don't feel unhealthy because of it.

In conclusion, I am drunk.

So much this! I am firmly anti-busybody.

And oh gosh, you just reminded me of that weird section on doctor forms that asks you to rate your general health. I had no idea how to answer that! I mean... I'm made out of generally functional 24 year old parts, but my brain is kind of shot and I'm allergic to everything around me, but it's not like I'm going to suddenly die of either of these things? I dunno. I checked "good."

(Man, I wish I was drunk.)

The thing is, "health" is often used to concern-troll people about their weight by others who don't actually give a shit about the person's actual health, or the damage they're doing to the person's mental health by harassing them about their weight. It also touches on the horrible treatment that some fat people have suffered at the hands of doctors (not just telling them to lose weight, but actually verbally abusing them, misdiagnosing completely unrelated conditions as being caused by their weight, and a wealth of other unprofessional behavior).

And generally speaking, the way in which a person does or doesn't choose to look after their own health isn't any of the business of some random stranger. Why isn't it, "As long as you're happy?"

But is a person who is fat or unhealthy disabled?

Randomly, I'm a massage therapist. I graduated with a girl, and she was telling me how she had this really large client. She did all our screening tests, APRs (which are active motion tests that are used to figure out which muscle specifically needs work on). She then told him, as professionally as she could, that he was having problems because he was carrying so much extra weight. He got really upset, which, clearly, is crazy because she did all these extra tests!

Except for the fact that I went to the same school as her and know for a fact that we don't have a single test that can say that someone's having issues because they're overweight. Is it a possibility? For sure! But it's also a possiblity that people are having problems because they're underweight. Because they're in the average weight range, but don't have developed muscles (aka: "Skinny fat"). Because they sit funny at work. Because they carry their purse the wrong way. Because they sleep funny. Because they stand all day. Because they sit all day. Literally because of anything at all, and sometimes it can take months for a massage therapist to finally figure out what's causing the pain (one of our teachers told us that she had a client who repeatedly had the same problem and that they could never figure it out ever. Until they figured out she sat on the couch when watching TV in a way that was causing her problems).

I didn't say anything, but all I could think is "Holy shit, you're really ignorant if you think you can work on someone, figure out what muscles are tight, and then decide that the muscles are tight because the person is overweight instead of looking at anything else they do in their daily life.

Sometimes it's black-and-white thinking.

Sometimes it's just having specific things that are dealbreakers.

I remember someone on tumblr posted a screenshot from the newer Batman movie with the Joker in it, and added the line "Joker without his makeup". A BUNCH of people jumped on them saying they were ignorant, and ableist, and a monster, and how that poor man probably got scarred during a war, and blahblahblah. It was a while before someone pointed out that it was -literally the Joker without makeup-. It was when he was hiding in with some cops.

The stupid was mind numbing.

SA - Also, I agree with you. It's good to call people on their shit, but someone saying one wrong or ignorant thing does not mean they're bad or evil forever and ever. Sometimes good people just say or do stupid shit. If it's a pattern of behavior/thought, I'll get up in arms about it, but if it's just a random idiotic thing that someone said/did, I'm more likely to be annoyed at that thing, maybe have a slightly lower opinion of the person, roll my eyes and go on.

it can still be for you, but you'll need to be more selectively in what spaces you seek and what people you observe

I agree...though for me it's less 'sjw' stuff and crap like 'HERE, SIGN THIS PETITION THAT I DIDN'T READ BEFORE SIGNING!' getting reblogged everywhere and 'I'M GOING TO USE A FACT THAT IS SO BLATANTLY WRONG THAT I BOTHERED JUST LOOKING UP THE *NAME* I'D KNOW THAT TO DISPROVE WHAT PEOPLE SAY.'
