I don't even know anymore.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 01:29 am (UTC)(link)Which...what the fuck.
Sometimes, I think that SJWs are actually offensive themselves in the sense that they take the actual struggles of actual oppressed or maligned groups and try their damnedest to apply them to situations where they don't fit. In so doing, they ultimately contribute to marginalization, in the sense that actual instances of prejudice get lost in all the fluff and wind up being ignored or not taken seriously.
It's a terrible irony.
Re: I'm starting to wonder if internet space is even for me anymore
Yeah, definitely agree with the rest of your comment. I love my sister and I think she's trying her best, but is going too far.
Re: I'm starting to wonder if internet space is even for me anymore
But then, wouldn't I only know what the problem was if I were close enough to them for it to affect me personally? I'm guessing most people saying "as long as you're healthy" aren't close to the person and are using it to mean that they don't really care.
And anyway, isn't health a pretty relative concept? I have a few chronic conditions but still consider myself healthy. Even someone with a visible disability or some really awful disease could consider themselves healthy if they felt they had it under control. I would consider "as long as you're healthy" in the context of weight to mean that a person's weight is fine as long as they don't feel unhealthy because of it.
In conclusion, I am drunk.
Re: I'm starting to wonder if internet space is even for me anymore
And oh gosh, you just reminded me of that weird section on doctor forms that asks you to rate your general health. I had no idea how to answer that! I mean... I'm made out of generally functional 24 year old parts, but my brain is kind of shot and I'm allergic to everything around me, but it's not like I'm going to suddenly die of either of these things? I dunno. I checked "good."
(Man, I wish I was drunk.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 05:09 am (UTC)(link)And generally speaking, the way in which a person does or doesn't choose to look after their own health isn't any of the business of some random stranger. Why isn't it, "As long as you're happy?"

Except for the fact that I went to the same school as her and know for a fact that we don't have a single test that can say that someone's having issues because they're overweight. Is it a possibility? For sure! But it's also a possiblity that people are having problems because they're underweight. Because they're in the average weight range, but don't have developed muscles (aka: "Skinny fat"). Because they sit funny at work. Because they carry their purse the wrong way. Because they sleep funny. Because they stand all day. Because they sit all day. Literally because of anything at all, and sometimes it can take months for a massage therapist to finally figure out what's causing the pain (one of our teachers told us that she had a client who repeatedly had the same problem and that they could never figure it out ever. Until they figured out she sat on the couch when watching TV in a way that was causing her problems).
I didn't say anything, but all I could think is "Holy shit, you're really ignorant if you think you can work on someone, figure out what muscles are tight, and then decide that the muscles are tight because the person is overweight instead of looking at anything else they do in their daily life.
