So, my boyfriend just upended half a bowl of chicken soup on his laptop. I'm under the impression that the best thing to do is to let it dry to prevent the keyboard from shorting, and then check on it? The screen seems okay. Any advice on how to handle this in order to minimize the risk of damage would be very welcome.

Hmm. Best thing I can say is turn off the computer and unplug the batter/ac adapter. Also an external devices.

After that, turn it upside down if you haven't already - the keyboard is the least of your worries, you don't want liquid getting any further into the machine.

Mop up any obvious remains of the spill with something absorbent (paper towel works best). Then rest it on a towel upside down and let it sit. If you like, putting it in the sun can help this a bit, but don't do that for long periods of time.

If it's fairly warm where you are, I'd say twenty four hours later might be okay to try plugging it in and turning it out. If it's a bit damp, though, go for longer and try to keep it somewhere dry.

maybe grains of rice could help with absorbing?

In the case of a smaller electronic I'd say yes, but it seems a bit impractical to submerge a whole laptop in rice.

Not to mention that there's the danger of grains getting in via the vents and so on, which could cause trouble. Overall, better to let it drain dry imo.

Thanks for the tips! It's kind of humid and wet out, so we'll probably give it two days to dry. He managed to flip the computer upside-down just seconds after it happened, so hopefully it didn't get a chance to seep too far in. And before we turned it off and pulled the battery, the screen wasn't giving any indication of things going wrong inside. So here's hoping all will be well! *fingers crossed*

That sounds promising! Especially that it got turned upside down immediately, I think that'll work very well in your favour.

The only other problem I can think of is that because it's soup (which has salt and so on as well as water), things might be sticky even after it's all dried out. Because of that, the keyboard may malfunction or get jammed. There could also be damage internally that affects the computer in the long term. If you notice anything dodgy once you turn it back on, take it in for a professional to look at, just in case. Or a friend you feel you can trust with the dismantling of the laptop, either or. :P
