He looked scary for the like 4 seconds after coming out of the cauldron in GoF, when he looked all skeletal and veiny, and his cheeks were really sunken in and his spine was super pronounced... it was naaasty.

He just makes me sort of uncomfortable. He's like that weird relative in your family that no one can figure out exactly how he's kin and who everyone else is sure is a pervert, only no one can prove it so all holidays are total awkward, awkward affairs because you can't make things easier by getting drunk otherwise you might spill all the suspicions and cause offense if they aren't true.

THIS x1000. He's not outright scary so much as just unsettling. Unsettling can hit people's squick buttons.

I agree! I love Voldemort, but his portrayal in the last movie especially was just awful - it was just like... DIRECTORS, COSTUME AND MAKEUP ARTISTS, WHAT WERE YOU DOING? He looked very goofy and not intimidating at all :( Pity, because under different circumstances, Ralph Fiennes as Voldemort could have been just amazing. I thought he was at least not laughable in OotP...

He's fairly scary in GoF and then just...loses his way. I can fit that version of Voldemort with the way he reads in the book of GoF but then they kind of move away from one another. I'm sure Ralph Fiennes had lots of fun but it just wasn't all that intimidating bar one or two moments (such as when he kills the teacher at the start of DH part 1.)

Confession: When I first saw GoF, I hadn't yet read the books because I'd always assumed it was too late to start/I was too old for them. Having since got over that and read the books, my view on Voldemort's first film appearance being the most frightening didn't change.

I wouldn't say he's scary (unless you're a young kid), but he's definitely creepy. Kind of a Uncanny Valley situation where he's just enough off from being human that it makes him kind of spooky.

Yeah, but honestly, IDGAF; his actions were what was scary. :/

(Or maybe I'm just overly sensitive- my grandparents were in Germany in WWII, and we grew up knowing it, which makes it hard for me to not see Voldemort as absofuckinglootly terrifying. >_>;)

(Not to say that other people might not find it scary, even without my background! Just that that was why I personally found it terrifying.)

I agree. By the last film he was hilarious. I will say in the fourth film I thought he was pretty creepy but I think that had more to do with the music than the fact that, you know, it's Voldemort.

[picture of Voldemort from Harry Pottermaking a kinda goofy face and another one of him smiling]

I think that everyone who thinks movie!voldemort is scary is an idiot. Or ten

just look at him

(Anonymous) 2013-06-07 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
He looks kinda like a turtle rather than a snake

I always pictured Voldemort as having hair...

I think it would make him scarier.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-08 01:23 am (UTC)(link)
hm.... i think it depends on the scene? it's almost like ralph fiennes couldn't decide how he wanted to portray him -- as the deadly, terrifying mass murderer or as the over the top, almost cracky villain? like in the end of DH2 he's OTT, but in the opening scene in HBP with the muggle studies teacher? i found that terrifying.

I interpreted this as "...an idiot. Or ten idiots."

[personal profile] nyappynhu 2013-06-08 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
He looked way scarier in the earlier films then he just became a continuous joke.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-08 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Every time he was on screen I wondered if having such tiny nostrils would be an advantage if one got a head cold.

(See, on the one hand, small would means you could get more pressure to blow the goop out into the tissue, but it would also result in a lot more mouth-breathing due to congestion ....)

No. Not scary.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-08 03:06 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just me, but I think it's more Ralph Fiennes that makes him scary- that guy is great at playing villains. Also, I think the creepiest parts are when he's nonchalantly evil- like the scene at the beginning of DH1 with Charity Burbage.

I will admit that the makeup/CGI was not great, and there were a lot of things that just looked stupid (like the infamously awkward Draco hug) or hammy (which is how I like a lot of my villains anyway)- but it's Ralph Fiennes that's scary.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-08 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
But he has no nose. He has. NO. NOSE!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-08 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I don't even think he's scary in the books. Don't get me wrong, the things he DOES are scary and deeply disturbing, between trying to kill toddler!Harry and the whole concept of Horcruxes; but when we see him in text, he sounds like an evil version of... pretty much every slightly sarcastic mean character. Bellatrix, on the other hand, is creepy as hell.

Huh. And here I would say that only the under-tens define scary as "has a scary-looking face" and not something more actions-based.

I felt Fiennes did the voice well.
