But you don't type that into Google without having heard of it SOMEWHERE.

It is possible? I stumbled upon my first fanfics quite on accident, though that was Buffy/Spike fics so probably easier to find?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
me too

i just googled (name of videogame), and stumbled upon fansites and forum topics, and then in one fansite there was fanfiction, but it wasn't called that, so i just kept checking every google result until on one thread someone linked to fanfiction.net

and then years later i saw livejournal linked on a fanfiction.net profile

that stuff does happen

having heard it doesn't mean you knew what you were getting yourself into

I remember the terrible day when I picked up a thread of conversation on a forum and then googled "Harry Potter chan" :\
that was the end of my youth.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. I remember back in the day when all those anime sites claiming some dudes weren't "yaoi" or had stickers that said "proud to be hentai free" made me look up yaoi and hentai to figure out what they were. WHOOPS.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:55 am (UTC)(link)
SA

By which I mean the "WHOOPS" is on those people. I was a bit overwhelmed by the graphic-ness of hentai (I think I was 14?), but yaoi (then later slash, and just... any) fanfic turned out to be right up my alley.

Theoretically, I love Dom so hard, but I have to completely 100% fucking agree with you about him on Twitter.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't twitter so can I get some context for this? sounds potentially fascinating

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
DA
I also followed him for a while but I didn't unfollow, I just stopped using twitter. He doesn't believe in god and posts stuff like "The oldest fanfiction is the Bible" and seems condescending and smug. I mean he's free to believe what he want and tweet about what he wants but so are other people and he's not better than them for not believing in god. It didn't happen often though and IDK if that's what OP and ayrt are talking about.

Yeah. I've been a fan of his since I was a kid but following him on Twitter has killed most of my fondness for him. Really disappointing.

I don't personally think it's as bad as everyone says either.

I think it's the idea of the people in question finding the more explicit stuff that skeeves people (me included) out so much.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I'm of the opinion that the creeperfans have kind of spoiled the fun for other RPF shippers. I mean, I think there is a point to the critique that it turns real life people into objects, and it does tend to attract a non-zero number of super invasive and/or tinhatter types. But it's also fantasy, usually of the "original-ish fic with X and Y famous people's faces and names plugged in" variety, which is a fairly healthy sexual/romantic/curiosity-based outlet, so long as the producers and consumers are all aware that it is fantasy.

It gets blurred a lot with the invasiveness of paparazzi culture, though, and with overinvested fans who don't understand that your personal fantasies might skeeve the hell out of the object of them. I mean, I don't run around in my personal life telling people I've had dirty dreams of them, because that's total TMI. But having had those dreams, or even constructing the elaborate fantasies? Those things don't actively hurt or distress anyone.

IDK. I JUST TYPED A LOT OF THINGS. /thoughts on RPF

i don't use twitter, so i don't know what he's up to. but i remember it going around tumblr that he called out matt fox for being a women abuser on there, so respect to him for that.

as far as rpf goes, it can totally be fun. there's just always those people who take it way too far, unfortunately.

Text: I think that the fact that I don't have a problem with RPF (like it, even) is because my first ship was RPF.

I just typed 'Boyd/Monaghan slash' into Google one day and found a fan fic archive for this pairing only. I was delighted! The fic was well-written (for my 14 y/o ESL self anyway) and everyone was lovely. I also looked at fan vids on Youtube.

And never once did anyone say that RPS is creepy and wrong and people look at RPF shippers through their fingers.

And I think I'll never see RPF as something wrong. (Everything has it's borders though, I am not okay with how invasive and creepy some RPFers can get.)

B!S: I had to unfollow Monaghan on twitter because he came of as an insufferable prick.

I'll fess up: I have a fantasy where the guy in my icon snarks with his co-stars about how the network screwed them over. I feel no guilt at all. None.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see why people have problems with RPF either. As long as it doesn't break the fourth wall, what does it matter?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
seconded. I love RPS and I keep to my side of the sandpit and don't bother or bring it to the attention of anyone involved.

RPS rocks.
