It very much depends on the type of RP, I suppose. When I was younger, I used to engage in RPs that consisted of long, detailed text posts. It was perfectly normal for a player to await an answer for as long as a week. [and no, not everyone there wrote purple prose]
It was almost the same as writing fic, except you were not the only one writing it.

But the short-ish kind of RP that seems to be widely accepted on the majority of the RP websites? It is good for writing smut and very simple romance. Wouldn't work with more complicated dynamics. And of course it gets much worse when the RPing is "purposefully terrible".

Still, there's nothing wrong with smut and idiotic love stories! Enjoy what you enjoy. There's nothing to be ashamed of.

Depends on the site. There are a lot of sites that still do the type of rping you describe - they're just usually not on lj/DW/etc or advertised there very often.

There's a few that I know of on LJ/DW that allow for good meaty text posts, though length and complexity vary by character and player and really involved stuff tends to take place on the "logs" comm rather than the main one. The Tartarus Experiment (http://tartarusnet.dreamwidth.org) is one. Could you link to some of the ones you're referring to?

AYRT

Sure! http://rpg-directory.com/ <- A directory where a lot of forum rp sites that are like that advertise.

Nah, good roleplayers make it work just fine.

Yeah, this was kind of snobbish of me to say.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
it often happens that way, op

embrace it

I have a character on F-list and I have my times when I go on there days on end for simple romance plots and text fucking. What can I say? I enjoy it. And a lot of people compliment me on my writing, too. I attract people who can write properly. So I have no problems when it comes to people who tlk lyke dis or use first person perspective in a horrible way.

As what [personal profile] dreemyweird said, enjoy it if you like it; there's nothing wrong with it.

There are, of course, people who take it waaay too seriously. You, OP, don't sound like one of them.

Background is a screencap of F.List, a forum for roleplayers

Text: I never saw the appeal of RP. I thought it was dumb as hell.

Then, a friend of mine joined this site. I made an account as a prank.

Despite the purposely terrible Rping, I'm actually enjoying myself (and getting turned on).

That'll show me.

Even though I don't roleplay, I made pages for the characters I used to draw, just for the fun of it. Also, when I'm bored, going through that site can be so fascinating.

That site not only has helped my writing and given me times of pleasure, but it's also given me people to go to when I have been in need to some support and afraid to talk to people in real life.
