Problematic

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Dammit. There are times that 'problematic' is a perfect word to use but I just can't any more because SJWs and the anti-SJWs ruined it for me.

What words do you avoid using now not because the word is bad or wrong, but because of the bad association you've now got going on?

I always have a problem with describing the way living creatures touch other living creatures. And I mean the kind of touch normally described by the words "fondling" and "caressing". They just crack me up.

Retard. As in to "to make slow; delay the development or progress of."

Good lord, the amount of embarrassed giggles you get when you mention paint retarder.

Privilige

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Also a valid word that has been ruined by the internet idiots.

Yes! Every time someone doesn't like someone else's argument? The line, "Check your privilege" gets thrown about. There are times where saying this is valid but not in the majority of times. It needs its own Godwin rule.

Fuck this word. I get the shudders just from hearing it :\

Social Justice Warrior.

Because lots of people are just using it as a way to write people off. At times and certain situations, it's definitely necessary, but other times, some people just don't want to think.

Trigger.

Even when talking about guns (my dad bought one recently), I get a twinge. But as for "this triggered me", even when something legit does trigger me, I'm hesitant to say so for fear of SJ backlash.

Re: Problematic

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Retard. I loved that word, then came the complaints.

Toxic.

Sometimes someone really is toxic, but it gets thrown around a lot for things that really aren't.

Patriarchy/patriarchal

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-06-09 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I study history, so when I bring this up I'm talking about it in a long term, evolution-of-society sense. I am including shit that happened in the goddamn 1880s.

But apparently patriarchy really means anything unpleasant that happens to you while you're female.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Only sort of related but, I study archaeology and I mentally roll my eyes so hard every time I hear someone talk about the "paleo diet".

Re: Patriarchy/patriarchal

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Care to expand on that, for the benefit of those of us who don't study archeology?

A lot of the issue is that pretty much all currently eaten food just plain didn't exist back then.

Re: Patriarchy/patriarchal

(Anonymous) 2013-06-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Here's a good article: http://hells-ditch.com/2012/08/archaeologists-officially-declare-collective-sigh-over-paleo-diet/

Basically the paleo diet has nothing to do with paleo people or agriculture and is just another fad name to tack onto the latest diet craze. You have all these fitness nuts going on about the paleo this and paleo that and not knowing what the heck they're talking about.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
So it's just a bunch of smart people whining about stupid people who are doing something good for themselves, but using a word that doesn't mean what they think it means.

Jesus. Fucking. Christ. I'm done.

I thought that was a satirical article?

The common word for genetically modified XYZ in my language can the translated as "gene-XYZ".

As a biology student, I can't helping making fun of that everytime I hear that. "NO! The vegetable has genes in it! We are all going to die!"

Social Justice. Without question. Even though it leaves me with a difficult time trying to describe, say, what the fuck Dorothy Day was about.

Re: Problematic

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Almost any word or catchphrase related to social justice issues anymore, honestly. The minute one comes up, at least in fandom contexts, I have to struggle not to tune out/scroll past/block, etc. (Curiously, I don't seem to have the same reaction when I'm reading something non-fandom related--I subscribe to a number of progressive publications and rarely have any problem there. Context is everything, apparently.)

Modesty. Creepy christian fundamentalists have ruined any other use of that word other to mean 'cover your ankles, tempress whore!'
