Well a lot of the complaints are about Jaden Smith's poor acting, so the fact that they made this film to be a vehicle for him is kind of a problem. He's... not great.

And that's my reason for schadenfreude right there. Jaden Smith. No discernable talent! His non-acting-ability has grated on me ever since The Day the Earth Stood Still, and I hate when rich & famous people think they can cram their talent-free offspring on us, and we're not supposed to notice that they CAN'T ACT.

I really liked him in The Pursuit of Happyness, mostly because at the time, he had the perfect amount of childlike innocence for the role, and I think watching a real-life father and son re-enacting what another real-life father and son had gone through was amazing.

Since then though, yeah.

I wonder though, if that's because Jaden was so much younger for that part that he wasn't consciously 'acting'. Sometimes, the really young children just get it bang on, then they get a bit older and it's like, whoa! stilted acting, what happened? Overthinking it, somehow.

to be fair, Will see's this from a father's eyes. He probably does think his kid is talented.

I've heard this film referred to by critics as Jaden Carter of Earth. Which made me laugh.

Aw, I liked him in The Kung Fu Kid. He was a smarmy little woobie and his interactions with old!depressed!Jackie Chan were sweet. Though I guess if he's at an age now where the cute kid thing doesn't work anymore and he has to rely solely on his acting talent, it could go poorly.

Agreed through and through. There was a post on Suri's Burn Book Yeah, guilty Tumblr pleasure that explained everything wrong with putting him in this movie: http://surisburnbook.tumblr.com/post/51731987253/i-am-so-ready-for-the-after-earth-press-tour-to-be
