Remember RaceFail/RaceWank '09? That period from January-June of 2009 when everyone on LJ and their mother was writing long angry essays about racial issues and cultural appropriation and whitewashing and privilege and whatnot, and getting into massive flamewars with each other as a result of slight disagreements between the arguments of said essays? And there were bannings and flouncings and dogpilings galore all over the comms?

Well, I was wondering if anything similar has happened lately, with any other type of wank? Is there a topic for wanking that's in vogue right now?

Try tumblr. That place is like a neverending racewank.

I don't think it ever really stopped. The difference now is that you can't pin it down to one thing, because every single preachy person on the entire internet adopted that format and applied it to whatever their pet cause is.

Probably not to the same extent. Fandom is a lot less cohesive right now than it was during Livejournal's heyday.

Also a lot less coherent.

Well, there has been a lot of label-policing going around, but I'm not sure that's on the same scale. Mostly it's just asshats trying to claim they get to invalidate somebody's particular identity just because they don't think it's "real."

But if you're looking for wankfests, yeah, try tumblr. The lack of a concrete commenting/discussion system means that a) people who value discussion aren't there, and b) there's less visible/concentrated backlash when somebody says something particularly fucked up.

Go back about two weeks or so on The House of Vines. Follow links. Be amazed.
