So in a conversation with a friend of mine, I was talking about how I can usually handle movie gore and death because it's nothing like actual real-life gore and death, you never, ever see a movie or tv corpse with blown pupils... and then my friend, a Fannibal, informed me that on Hannibal, you actually DO. See corpses. With blown pupils.

...I had a few different reactions at the same time to this. On the one hand, fucking amazement and awe for a show taking the time to include a detail that the average viewer is not going to notice or care about. On the other hand, disappointment that I can't actually watch Hannibal now (I was planning to get around to it), because the reason I know about blown pupils is that I've seen them in real life. Even been around for the exact moment of brain death. I'm not sure if I'd be triggered, but it's probably best not to chance it.

Is there anything like this for the rest of you guys? Some rare realistic detail you have to avoid personally, but just knowing it's included in some piece of fiction or another leaves you gawking nonetheless?

What are blown pupils? I'm afraid of what google will show if I google it...

Blown Pupils / Mydriasis

The pupils dilate as wide as they can go, pretty much. By itself it doesn't necessarily mean anything worse than brain trauma or damage to the ocular nerve, but combined with the absence of other brainstem reflexes (no gag reflex, no blink reflex, no VOR, etc.), it's one of the main indicators of brain death. Which generally precedes death-death.

Most of the google results should just be people taking selfies after a visit to the optometrist. I hope.

Nope, mostly potheads. The horror, the horror.

There was a scene in the movie "Chaplin" that sent me up a wall once and I have to fast forward through it to see the movie. The scene where Charlie's mom is locked up, she screams a certain way... I can't describe it, but I've been involved with people who've had serious mental health issues. That scream was waaay too real for me. I remember wondering if there were other mental problems in the fam, someone else she based it on, but couldn't bring myself to look it up.

It's not a terror scream. I can watch horror all night long and not find the screams problematic. The one in Chaplin hits a nerve for me.
