No, I get what you mean. The characters are pretty amazing, but the story gets...awkward. Like, what they just squeezed into one season could've been stretched out over two, really, just about, and filled in the bits that made it get confusing.
My other theories on why Ragnar offered up Athelstan as sacrifice (beyond the one I put up already) go like: 1. He knew Athelstan hadn't truly stopped being a Christian in his heart so he brought that home hardcore (but then, again...there should've been some damn followup/resolution instead of just "oh yeah, Athelstan's still hanging out with everybody and being their buddy and things are hunky dory). 2. He thought that sacrificing the priest of another god would have pleased Odin et al and he really wanted them to give him a son...
And yeah, I didn't really understand the "no you can't light the boat" thing either. Maybe he thought it would give her too much respect and people would still think of her as their proper first lady? (Well, you know what I mean) No, I really don't have a good reason for that one so I'm rolling with Ragnar being petty and/or figuring he'd done well enough by the former Earl (who I kept seeing as d'Artagnan the whole time from The Man in the Iron Mask) that he wasn't going to do any more than he already had.
