The NSA spying on innocent American citizens

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Does this scare anyone else? I'm really offput that Obama keeps defending it with "Well, you can't have 100 percent security without giving up some freedoms". All I can think of was, okay, yeah, but you never told us about this. You went behind our back and created a program that would allow you to monitor/listen into our phone conversations and whatnot. How is this legal under the 4th amendment?! This type of thing has a huge possibility for abuse. I really, really hope that the lawsuit goes through and stops this.

TO be honest, I really regret voting for him. :/

Blame Bush. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Patriot_Act He's the one that started the whole mess, not Obama--he's just continuing it. I don't like it either. I want the Patriot Act dismantled and have since it passed.

This has been around longer than even the news is reporting. I knew a cop in my town who admitted this was going on while Bush was still in office.

Some of it was, some of it wasn't. And Obama still fully deserves blame for keeping it going.

Blame Bush and Obama. Both of them have been doing it.

obama can control his own actions and ideas that he supports. bush is not responsible for obama's continuation of this bullshit.

I...yeah. I don't regret picking him over Romney, but I do think if I'd known what I do now I would have been more hesitant about it.

Tbh, this whole thing reminds me of 1984. It's not quite the same thing...but all things considered it really seems like we're starting to slide towards a Big Brother government and I'm not comfortable with that. Actually, a few things he's done have struck me as tending towards being Orwellian which...yeah. Like I said, makes me a little uncomfortable.

tl;dr: I'm right there with you on hoping the lawsuit goes through.

He didn't instigate this program. It's been ongoing since Bush. So no, he did not go behind your back and create this program. He just kept it going.

I believe there have been lawsuits going ever since the "Patriot Act" was put into effect. Good luck with those going anywhere. :/

Honestly, even though I disagree with a lot that Obama has done I agree with a lot he's done too and I really think Romney would have done a lot worse. You can bet that he'd definitely be keeping all this NSA spying business going if not adding and expanding it.

Re: The NSA spying on innocent American citizens

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
You do realize he expanded what Bush put into place and just used the Patriot Act as a reason for why he could do it, right?

Yup.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-10 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
The fact that Bush started the program is hardly a defense of Obama. He's largely maintained or expanded Bush-era policies on stuff like this. If you don't like Bush on civil liberties, you have to be critical of Obama as well. I really don't get how he's somehow blameless just because he didn't originate the policies. Nor does the fact that Romney would have done the same absolve him of responsibility at all - the fact that we had two shitty choices with regards to civil liberties doesn't somehow make one of those choices not shitty.

I can't regret voting for him because I feel like all the other options would have been even worse, but... yeah.

maybe i've just heard too many conspiracy theories, but i assumed everyone was being spied by everyone by this point, and it's just coming to light now

Yeah, I've always assumed the government was doing this shit anyway so it's not really all that shocking and horrifying to me.

Look, if Obama wants to listen in on me complaining about school and fangirling over hot actora, be my guest. Though what fanfiction, tumblr, and homework has to do with national security is beyond me...

It does lead me to wonder how they sort the signal out of the noise. Having the information doesn't do you any good if you can't pinpoint the information you're really interested in.

I agree. I think that it's wrong, as a matter of principle, whether or not it would actually affect my life in a tangible way, and a large part of why I didn't vote for Obama (not this program specifically, obviously, but civil liberties in general). I think it's an invasion of privacy and an abuse of liberty and a totally unreasonable extension of government, and I think if they want to make the case that it's justified on the grounds of necessity and security, they have to at least make their case somewhat openly instead of hiding away all the details of the program. If America can be said to be a republic, they must obey the laws; if it can be said to be a republic, they have to accept on a fundamental level the capacity of the people to make the choice for themselves.

And it's not just that there's a surveillance program being adopted; it's that there's an entire structure of surveillance, an entire security apparatus that is constantly being expanded, that is largely out of the purview of the normal process of law, that is unaccountable and secret.

(For reference, I voted for Jill Stein)

They're not just spying on American citizens, they're spying on people from other countries, too, since most of the world's internet traffic passes through America.

And sure, you can make the argument that it doesn't affect me, because I haven't done anything wrong - but it's the principle of the thing. Sure, they say they might have goood intentions, to "protect the country from terrorism", but can I trust them? Why should I?

...You do realize that's what the majority of Americans who object to this feel, right? So bitching at those of us who agree with you isn't going to do any good?

As far as the whole 'You can make the argument'...Honestly? What worries me more than the principle of the thing is the sheer level of potential abuse this has, particularly in conjunction with some other recent presidents that were set where the judicial system here is concerned - Particularly where the NDAA [2012 and current] is concerned. That part *does* have a stronger effect on Americans specifically and love us or hate us, we're in the front line for this whole thing.
